Right so I'm looking in to buying a PS3 but don't fancy forking out £300ish for it, so I took to ebay. A lot of sellers are selling them for about £20-60 but they all say "faulty YLOD/RLOD" etc.

Question: what do these "lights of death" mean, and can I still play games on a PS3 that's got one of these lights? If not why would they bother selling them online when clearly no one would buy it?

Even if I only got a few months out of a console, £20 :lew:

As far as i'm aware, YLOD pretty much means the thing won't work, whole thing shuts down etc. I could be slightly off but from what i've heard that's the general gist of it :hmmm:

I had my ps2 for 10 years before it broke, why the fuck do PS3s all seem to break within a year or 2? :lew:

This guy on ebay says "YLOD fixed but no telling how long before it happens again"

Ya, I THINK you can get them repaired if you send them off to Sony or something, I forget the details, Andrew/Mitsuhide Akechi should know, the amount of times his breaks :lew:

I've personally never had a yellow light so I have no idea what to do in that situation :wacky: mine just fuck up spontaneously :andry:

they're just selling dead PS3's because they don't work anymore, people probably buy them for spare parts.

Or like the RROD Xbox's people bought them cheap and found temporary fixes.

Nubby questions, why does it matter what GB you have? No memory cards or something? Also can you get external storage devices?

Roughly what does, say, 40GB store in terms of games? If it's only like 2 games then...poo

Well if we're talking a PS3 with a 40GB hard drive, that is a little small. If we're talking 60GB or 120GB, it's probably plenty if you don't plan on using your PS3 as a storage device lol. 120GB+ consoles might cost a tad more.

In terms of games, you could probably get by on a 40GB if you don't mind formatting like every 15-20 games. Some games save portions of themselves to the hard drive which takes maybe 2-3GB.

the HD are pretty much the memory cards. The more HDD space the more games, music, movies, pictures etc you can store on it.
so you can get a cheap 20gig one if you dont' plan on storing anything on your PS3 other than save files and maybe some games that run shit when not installed on the HDD

The GB is mostly going to be taken up by mandatory game installs, music, photos etc, game saves are generally only a few hundred KB, generally speaking a 40-60GB is fine as long as you don't have a mountain of PS3 games and you don't mind missing out on some of the optional perks like music etc :monster:

And aside from the old 60GB PS3s (wouldn't reccomend them, my last 2 were the old 60GB and both died suddenly) no PS3s can play PS1/2 games without something that might already be released, not sure, which allows the old backwards compatibility. That would be sold seperately though so if i'm assuming you want to go cheap, hang on to your PS2 :monster:

External storage, not too sure actually, not heard of anything like that unless someone else knows of something like that? :hmmm:

Hope that's somewhat helpful etc :mokken:

But then you could uninstall it or something when you're done with it? There are only a handful of games I fancy playing on it actually, I'd just like the ability haha :wacky:

I have the old 60 gig PS3 (had it for 3 yrs) and it hasn't died yet, I think I've used maybe 20 gig of the 60 and have about 15 games total.

I never put my music on my ps3 because i can stream it from my comp, so if you have a set up like that I reckon get a 20 gig ps3 for now coz its cheap
then later buy a 60 hdd for like $50 off ebay when you save some money

My word of advice, stay away from YLOD PS3's. Like the RRoD's of the 360 world, they can be fixed, and fixed in your home (or sent out), but if you fix them at home, they'll only crap out again. I actually fixed my friend's YLOD, but it went bad again in about a month or 2. If you send it to Sony to refurbish it, it'll probably work fine, but if you tampered with it already, they won't fix it as it is now tampered with.

As for memory storage amounts, I can't totally answer. I know the older, backwards compatible versions were 80, 60 and 20 GB, I think. The 40 GB, that's now discontinued was not backwards compatible, and came after the 80. Then came the thin series which had really high storage amounts, like 120 and 250 GB, I think? If you can find an 80 GB for a reasonable price and one that wasn't tampered with, that would be a really good buy. It has a legit amount of space, its backwards compatible, and I've had mine for about 4 years and it works like a charm. :ryan:

Best of luck on your searches!

I'm not sure if my info is VALID, so I'd read up on it, or maybe someone can point out if it is or not, but from what I've heard/read, you can also put your save data on a USB flashdrive. Plug it in, save, remove, plug in paste, etc.

Not sure if that goes for everything, though.

Though, I do advise just saving up maybe a 50 extra for more Gigs on the ps3. I have a 250 gigs, and my boyfriend is here, he's a big gamer, and has taken up 120 already. :wacky: At home he has a 60 and 500 gigs I think. :hmmm:

AHEM. I could also just send both his your way. :awesome:

I think I'd be dead before I tried... xD

Good luck, Dave!

You're half right Kira, you can copypaste SOME save files, but others are copy protected, for them you need to do a data transfer from one PS3 to another, wipes the data on the recieving PS3 in the process though :hmmm: you just need to connect them both with an ethernet cable I think.

Oh ffs, the complications :lew:

Righto, I've found one on ebay I'm winning a bid on for £13 :lew: 60GB, fully working and apparently backwards compatable (someone remind me to buy a controller ayeee?) so with any luck I'll win!

60GB sounds MORE than enough - I'll only play one game at a time anyway, and there's only a handful I'm after, it'll take me years to fill that bad boy up. :lew:

Wish me luck!

I'd advise buying the controller online too, in game shops i've seen them selling PS3 controllers for £40+, you could buy a brand new game for that :ffs:
