I might have missed this but is Bhunivelze constructed from the old Cocoon? When the pillar collapses it seems hollow.

No The New cocoon is made from scratch only using a Levitation system from the old 13th Ark.

The thing is, the original IS hollow in the first place. People live on the inner surface, not literally within it, except for the floating Eden city.

Bhunivelze, it seems, that people live on the outer surface, just like earth. The core is likely hollow like cocoon, so that it can contain the gravitron, and the fact that it also decreases the overall weight of the planet, allowing it to float easier.
