Close registration for a while!

Well, I have a suggestion.. At my old forums I used to go to, when you signed up, you had to get the confirmation e-mail, and then you had to wait like 5-7 days for admin approval of your account... Maybe that'll work?

I'm kinda late but 5-7 day confirmation sounds great!!!
I think that should slow them down, I mean, what other way can they hurt us?

Don't you guys get it? That's exactly what they want us to do is to lock down registration. They're going to try and do everything in the power to shut down FFF and locking down registration would only be the beginning of it. Hell, from what I've heard they already have tried to turn all of you members against us staff and it had actually started working until last night when they came on here making a spectacle of themselves. No, we're not locking down registration. We'll deal with them as they come. We've got the power and the ability to delete their horrendous posts and ban their asses from this forum, so I'm not concerned in the least little bit. We can handle it. I think Busta and myself proved ourselves capable of that last night. You guys just all need to calm down and Finn, please, I know you've had a bad day, but please don't call the members fucking crybabies, okay?

Hey! Avin is right.
Plenty of forums do have confimation requests.
It's not a bad idea if you ask me. And it would probably keep the pests at bay. =x

Yeah, we should all listen to Avin.. He seems to know his stuff (laughs).

EDIT: And the 5-7 day thing wouldn't be too bad, because legit members could still sign up, while the assholes might get tired of this after waiting a week just to be banned within minutes. Har har har, we got their balls in a vice.

Closing registration will be letting them get what they want, which is the death of FFF.
And if I remember right, you do have to go through a email confirmation, but waiting a couple days would drive away new members.
And having mods go through and approve new registree's would be a shitload of work.
Things are fine the way they are, we just have to watch out for those who intend to harm the forum and it's members.

But if the 5-7 day wait would have a few members who signed up take a leave, wouldn't that mean they weren't going to be an active member anyway?

I know some schools block forums, but I know my school certainly didn't. For all I know, wherever they're posting at could be similar.

Now, I've been a member of several forums and have seen rivalry between those forums. Heck, I've had a raid on my own meager forum from some jackasses on a forum that I was once a member of. I certainly don't want to see this forum fall into the same hell hole, so I'm going to make the most sensible suggestions I can.

My suggestions are as follows;
-Enable member validation for a set number of time (preferably for a week).
--Create a single forum and change the permission masks to only enable access to the staff and validating members (this is to avoid drama and paranoia between existing members and validating members).
---Also create a pinned thread for freelance general chatting among validating members, like a local pub or something along those lines.
-If new members show genuine signs of interest in FFF, then allow validation for their accounts.
-If new members spam up the only forum that is accessible for them, resort to IP banning.

How can you tell if an interest is genuine? Well, you'll have to judge that for yourselves. By testing the potential members' patience and being able to examine the members' posts, this will help in sorting out members (and even getting rid of possible spam bots in the process) and would perhaps place less stress upon the staff.

Hope this helps.
- Shen

Exactly Shenorai. If they wanted to be a contributing, dedicated member of FFF, then they'd be able to put up with the wait.

-Enable member validation for a set number of time (preferably for a week).
^^ Preach on!

This is a decision that our admins Darkblade, Judge Rulia and Sephiroth will have to make. We appreciate any type of ideas or advice you have to give us, but I still think it's a bad idea to even try and mess with registration right now, because of the fact that these people are trying to close us down and we're just not going to allow that to happen.

One week?
NO WAY.
Would you want to wait for 7 days after registering before you can post?
HELL NO
A newb joins, expecting to be able to go and chat with some people about a beloved video game franchise, but they find out they have to wait a week before they can. What will they do? find another forum to join.
Like I said, THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT TO HAPPEN!!
They WANT use to restrict new members. They WANT us to close down.
Why? Because that is their goal. Simple as that.
If you want to restrict new member to wait a week, you might as well close the forums now. People join because they want to be able to get into the action now.
If you bought a game and it told you "you must wait one week before you can level up again", would you wait? or would you be pissed off and get a different game?

In my opinion, This is the WORST idea ever.

Sorry to be so blunt Avin, but I'm being honest.

This would mean the death of FFF, and I do not want that to happen.

The ideas are appreciated Avin, truly they are, but Tielknight is right on this one. It would mean the death of FFF and that's the last thing we want. If I were a new member wanting to sign up, I'd want in on the forum action right away and I would not have to wait for one whole week before I was allowed to post. That'd be pretty upsetting and I'd say "screw this forum" and try to go and find somewhere else.

I'm actually kind of curious right now...
I've joined forums that have the confirmation number, but it's usually automatically dispatched to your signup adress...meaning, there's absolutely no wait.

What are the advantages to a confirmation process if it's automatically confirmed?

Is there anyway to restrict the creation of accounts based on IP address? That way, once they're banned once, they won't easily/quickly be able to set up another account making your (mods') lives easier.

Apparently, no one thoroughly read my post...

I also suggested that, in ADDITION to enabling validation, there would be a single forum open only for validating members and the staff to use. That way, they can still post, but their actions are monitored by the staff. Those who are already registered members would not be allowed to enter the forum, for that would risk more drama than needed.

I don't know..seems a lot like the newbie herding idea. What if these people were to post like complete angels, then when released, made a mess of things? Input appreciated however, but I don't know if it is something we can implement.
