In any of the Final Fantasy storys, do you get to BYE a Chocobo or just get one on a random time?

you can buy one, but it is cheeper to randomly run into one or hunt for them.

You can never indefinitely own a chocobo, but you can rent them from numerous retail Moogles throughout Ivalice. I find the time limit to be quite annoying though...
