Can't beat Vexen: Tips, please?

I've had this game since it came out on the GBA and I have never been able to complete it. I just cannot beat Vexen.

He blocks all of my cards, and I can only attack him from behind, but I can never get behind him because he keeps turning. And when I do try to go behind him he puts ice on the ground and I end up sliding.

Seriously, it depresses me that I cannot beat this guy. I clearly have no skill with the card system of this game either.

Any tips at all would be appreciate. ;_;

I only beat Vexen in Re:CoM, so I dunno how much of a difference there is between the GBA and PS2 version :/

For me personally, I remember using dodge-roll a LOT. Back and forth, left and right, circles...it didn't matter, 'cause it saved a lot of trouble with those dark icicles xD

As for cards, do you have a decent amount of 0 cards? If I remember right, 0 cards can trump any other card/s as long as it's used after the opponent's card. Also, it might seem scary, but wait for Vexen (and any boss really) to use their cards first before you throw out your own so you know what card to use. You can even interrupt their attack as long as the card is on the screen if I remember right, so you don't have much to lose.

Use some fire magic to distract him, the run behind him and attack. This is a battle that certain sleights like sonic blade are extremely useful. Hit him in the back with sonic blade and you can keep his guard down for a sonic blade combo. Make sure your cards are around 7 and up and a supply of 0 cards.

Vexen is quite simple compared to some of the fights that are yet to come.
