Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter and the latest installment in the Call of Duty video game series. The title is scheduled to ship before the end of Activision's 2009 fiscal year for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360.[3] It is set in the Pacific theater and Eastern front of World War II.[2][1]

Multiplayer
World at War will feature cooperative gameplay (two players via split-screen (on consoles) or four players online) for the first time in the franchise. Vehicles, first introduced in Call of Duty: United Offensive, will return as well as new squad-based elements within multiplayer

Development

World at War will have a two-year development cycle, double that of Treyarch's previous title, Call of Duty 3.[4] The game will be powered by an enhanced version of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine - improvements have been made to the physics engine and lighting model. Environments are now more destructible and can be set on fire with the flamethrower (which features propagating fire). Bullets can also cut holes in thin wood, making a gap big enough for the player to climb through.[4]
A full-sized replica PBY Catalina was constructed for motion capture use.[4]

Oh god, not WW2 again. It's beginning to get boring that they keep revisiting WW2 all the time, COD4 was such a hit BECAUSE it was set in modern times. They should stick to modern times now, do some wars that are actually happening around the world or make up a story of their own.

Yeahh I see your point but I think it will be a big hit anyway. People will complain now but when the game is actually released they will probably love it. From the looks of it, it wont hit shelves till 2010.

It looks like it has extremely good graphics from the screenshot you gave but I have been disappointed before by thing like that, especially COD3 I found that to be rather crap. COD4 was miint though. Hopefully you'll be right and COD5 will turn out to be a pretty good game.

I agree. They really shouldn't have gone back to WW2, I'm not saying they don't have the ability to make it was good as 'Modern Warfare' but like Rene has pointed out...the reason that was so good was because it was different to every other war game due to the time period it is set in.

I'd just like to say other wars rather than WW2 because it feels like once you've played one war game then you've played them all...just with minor changes in each one. Again, I'm not saying they don't have the ability to make it great. I just liked the change in CoD4.

Yeah you both are right. But I have high expectations for this game the Four-PLayer and even just split-screen Co-op sounds awesome and I had wished they had it in CoD 4.

If they succeed in making it at good as was CoD2 on WWII; it's a "Must-Have" it doesn't matter the age is which is set.

But it's true; CoD4 was a hit 'cause it used new features, weapons and abilities that weren't possible on a WWII enviroment.

Also, Treyarch's CoD3 wasn't neither epic nor memorable. Let's see what they can do this time and gives a intense (and longer xD) game.

Yeah I think WaW wil be a awesome game. I am suprised no one has been talking about the new Co-op features. That should be something to make it more interesting. It is also pretty interesting that it is on many more systems this time. As always the PS3 and 360 will get the good versions and the others will get the okay ones.

Since the Co-Op of Perfect Dark on the days of the N64; i haven't liked the co-op modes. The fact that if your partner respawn makes you lost half of your health was awesome. It makes you really play the missions like ateam and with care about your own and partner life.

However as you said is a nice addition. Let's hope they could make it worth it and fit it in the story. It would be nice that your 2-player have additional skills or abilities that the main player doesn't have or unlock special missions or parts made only for 2-players.

I don't mind the WW2 setting too much... what actually bothers me is that its a Treyarch game.

Treyarch, of course, is the secondary developer of the CoD franchise. They worked on expansion for the first two CoD games, as well as developing the console version of CoD2 (called The Big Red One), which was built on the same engine as Infinity Ward's brilliant CoD2, but was a stand alone game in its own right. The only game in the franchise that Treyarch made outright was CoD3, which was actually much of a filler title that was made while Infinity Ward was working on CoD4, and released quickly to keep the franchise in the minds of the consumer.

Its obvious to any fan of CoD that Infinity Ward is far superior in this franchise. That said, CoD:WaW is likely not CoD5, as many have assumed... its actually a new and seperate game in the series, and as such, its not exactly the next game in the main series (think about it as something like RE: Code Veronica).

With that information, it should also be noted that Infinity Ward is currently developing a new title that is being kept mostly on the down low... it is suspected by many that they are, in fact, working on the real CoD5, which was originally talked about as being another Modern Warfare game... and since CoD:WaW does not hold a number, I reckon this to be a fair assesment.

All in all, I will be buying CoD:WaW... though most likely used... and a couple months after its release (which is actually going to be early 2009). That said, if it were Infinity Ward who was making this installment, I would be buying it the day of release... they're that much better.

Bingo! There you have it.

I'm not excited for this game in the least bit because some obscure secondary developer--not Infinity Ward--is in charge of development. They may enhance the presentation and add some interesting features, but in the end, it'll probably pass as a mediocre FPS. Treyarch hasn't given us any reason to expect a different result.

I'm looking forward to Infinity Ward's next Call of Duty project, personally.

Hmmmm we have some very interesting thoughts here. I would actually probably prefer a real CoD5 as opposed to WaW but I am looking forward to both truthfully. I cannot wait to see how WaW turns out in the end since right now, It's getting mostly negitive thoughts towards it and people dont expect much from it. I would like to see it shock people and be amazing. I would seriously like that ^^.

Wow, I've heard some great reviews on the game, mostly positive, with most of the negatives coming out of online play and the usual suspects in glitches. But on the whole, seems like it's a hit so far. It runs with the same CoD4 engine so I guess that helps it out a bit. I would've picked this game up if the store actually had some in stock, tbqh. >.>

Well so far of what I heard Call Of Duty world at war is amazing and I think am going to get it. The co-op mode looks Sick!!! This is a nice present but do not shoot on christmas lol.

I'm not going to buy this, as I'll probably wait for CoD 6 to come out later in '09 by the same people who made CoD 4.

CoD 5 looks aright, but I'd rather borrow it from a friend instead of paying $60 for it. I like the online factor, but not as much as I like Halo 3, so I don't really spend too much time on CoD games. I'm getting kinda sick of WWII games. At least this focuses a bit more on the Jap side.

I've yet to play online so I can't really comment on that. But from what I've played of the main storyline (which is very little xlolx), it's solid, I think I started out on Veteran difficulty...difficult mode is difficult and I've died like 10 times at least in the first level/chapter. :wacky:

Voice acting is brilliant as well. :-)

COD World at war

A few things.

After you secure the drop in the courtyard what do you do?
He sends private Houston and then nothing happens...

Next, who has online?
I want a fight online! I'm really bad though!

I played COD WAW on my 360 for a bit, but have ended up going back to COD4, several reasons why :)

1. COD WAW is very much an unfinished product, rocket jumps, glitching under the ground easily, and bayonet jumping are just a few of the problems I can name off the top of my head.

2. Although I've always been a massive fan of the kar98k and it has been my trusted weapon of choice through every WWII setting, the modern weapons offered in COD4 have drawn me in that little bit more, the kar just doesnt shine as much as it used to....

3. Dogs + Hardcore = free kills, the attack dogs make a rather interesting and welcome addition to the COD series, but im a hardcore fan (the realism behind the hardcore mode makes the COD series stand head and shoulders above the rest) and the dogs are nigh on impossible to handle as one bite and your done for, which can lead to a very frustrating few minutes.

4. Vehicles, now most people would say these are a plus, I personally feel they spoil a game that is based around scrimage maps, now if the battlefield was a few km then they would be welcome, otherwise there just yet another annoyance to try and deal with.

5. Underpowered and overpowered weapons, now I know what your thinking, COD4 has a few of these being the m16, p90 and m249 SAW, but the vast number of imbalanced weapons leaves only a few correctly balanced....The lmgs are grossly overpowered (again) being stupid spray and pray death machines, the thompson, ppt (russian submachine gun) and mp40 are also in the realms of overpowered, not to mention the stupid flamethrower, that should in all intensive purposes be disabled in multiplayer, being far more accurate than they actually should be, the underpowered weapons are easily the BAR having completey become pathetic in hit for hit damage, and the mp44 which is far more inaccurate that its brother the mp40....

The only balanced guns ive come across are the rifles (tokarev, kar98k and springfield) and the sten...some serious work to do before the guns can even be classified anywhere near balanced....

6. Fun factor, I have 20 times more fun playing hardcore mode on COD4 than I ever could on COD WAW, when I play COD WAW I feel like ive achieved very little when I make it into the top 5, whereas with COD4 it feels like a great achievement as there is a constant challenge due to the game being in a lot more balanced and finished state.

7. American company, classic American arrogance, my appologies to our American friends, but I get sick and tired of all WWII games being based around "the greatness of the american army", truth be told, in WWII the american army were nothing more than extra bodies and came under constant scrutany from the powers that be, due to there "gung-ho" style of combat, I for one would love to see a WWII game stick to some facts for once and actually put in the french resistance commando's that did a damn fine job on several sabotaging missions, yes we all know the Americans were a big help in WWII, but they didnt WIN the war, it was the Russians who took Berlin.

A major draw of COD4 is it not only has the USMC, but the SAS, Arab elitists and russian communist extremists, several different wings from different cultures and backgrounds making for an extremely interesting wargame, Infinity ward also understood during there WWII games there was more than the Americans, Germans, Russians and Japanese, and were kind enough to include the british, french resistance contacts (in the single player) and even the italians, Treyarch have much to learn if there going to get the formula spot on.

8. Pace of the game, COD4 still remains much more fast paced than COD WAW, with even the dullest of maps seeing tight close quarters and fast paced combat...some points in COD WAW can often lead to camp fests that take an age for anyone to move, which can be extremely boring.

9. Reward System, I was one of the people that complained about the toned down reward system in COD WAW, all you have to aim for are perks and prestige levels making for a pretty easy task to complete, COD4's has a brilliant reward system, taking the next step with gun camo's which although they are only asthetic, make for some great bragging rights and stuff to aim for that can keep you blasting away for years to come as you try to get that m1200 shotgun its shiny gold skin....

10. Airstrikes > Artillery bombardment, although they both induce pretty much the same effect, theres nothing cooler than seeing several jets race overhead blanket bombing an area, Treyarch took the lazy option it seems and rather than actually doing something visual, just opted for a few shell noises and random explosions...come on Treyarch you can definatley do better...

that just my 2 cents between the two, if anyone still plays COD4 on the PC lemme know and we can hook up a match ;)

decided to give COD W@W a second chance, since COD4 is not getting the support in terms of PB updates, so the hackers are beginning to file in wrecking a previously fun and flawless game...

Although it does have its problems that ive listed above, theres a few things IT DOES HAVE that COD 4 doesnt....

1. Sniping is so much more useful and possible compared to COD4, as Treyarch actually took heavily into account weapon range, kickback and spread, so an mp 40 user has little to no chance of headshotting a sniper across the map. There is also a lot more scope for sniping, the general map size being bigger and spraying weapons being a lot less, Muzzleflash is also spot on too! As a sniper I constantly keep my eyes out for any sign of movement or muzzleflash, on COD4, the muzzleflash often didnt come directly from the tip of the barrel but more from the left of the barrel, making a counter-shot much..much more accurate.

2. Martyrdom is nowhere near as big of a problem as it is in COD4, the re-fuse timer perk and flak jacket perk work wonders against "those that would die looking for a cheap kill", the sticky nades are great fun as well, throw one at someone and watch em run around as the nade ticks down and blows up on them.

3. Spray and pray....Viable but not be all and end all, about the most ANNOYING thing about COD4 is the frequency of lmg or assault rifle spray and prayers, although the MG's in w@w are still slightly overpowered (bullet penetration needs toning down a bit so they can only pierce one wall, not infinite) theres little a spray and prayer can do against a sniper at long distance.

4. Kar98k quite possibly my most favorite weapon on the entire CoD series, the Kar is a heck of a lot of fun and pulling off crackshots with this gun is highly satisfying as it requires skill, and quite a bit of it.

5. Nade spam hotspots, there are very few as the wider and larger maps lead to less bottlenecking in "Nade alley" also the extra nade perk is only 2x instead of 3x meaning a lot less spamming.

6. hit detection, for some reason its a lot better...I've often found myself cursing at COD4 after I hit someone blatantly in the head on hardcore for them to not die, although the problem is still there, its to a much lesser extent.

7. much more dynamic spawning, if there is someone spawn camping, chances are you will spawn again out of there line of sight but nearby, giving you chance to get revenge on the camper, on COD4 you would always spawn again in one of the designated spots and fall victim to the same, or possibly another spawn camper.

8. Much more violence and much more interactivity! COD w@w pulls no punches as your head legs and arms can get blown off and the ocassional swearing is put into place, unlike COD4, the auto warning system will now warn others of snipers, tanks and dangerous situations (Spy plane, Dogs and Artillery bombardments) its always great fun to hear the enemy american raiders shouting "Sniper get down get down!!" :)
