Its coming up to that time of year again when we find out who is the best out of the 2012 BAFTA Video Game Award nominations. Friday 16th March is when the British Academy Video Games Awards are announced to this year’s winners and we are interested to see who has made the shortlist.
The nominations shortlist may contain a few surprises and it seems that Batman: Arkham City and L.A. Noire have come out on top with eight each, other big games are LittleBigPlanet 2 and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception with six. The shortlist of the nominees are discussed in an article on EuroGamer and fans of Skyrim will pleased to know it has five along with Portal 2 and XBLA game Bastion has received two nominations for Debut Game and Game Innovation.

Another downloadable title From Dust has also been recognized in the Innovation and Strategy categories, Stephen Merchant’s crazy robot character Wheatley from Portal 2 and Aaron Stanton in L.A. Noire along with Mark Hamill’s Joker from Batman: Arkham City have all been nominated for their character portrayal. Many of us will be looking at the GAME Award of 2011 as voted for by the public, this category contains some great titles including Skyrim, Batman, CoD: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, FIFA 2012, L.A Noire, Portal 2, Minecraft and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Which one do you think will go home with the award?
With so many categories to choose from including best game and action to debut, mobile and handheld titles there are plenty of ways for games nominated in different categories to pick up a few BAFTAs. PocketGamer has taken a look at what to expect in the mobile and handheld classifications as an iOS title won its first award last year with Cut the Rope in the Best Handheld Game category, it looks like BAFTA has had to adapt to this and a new Mobile and Handheld class has evolved this year to cope with the growing amount of iOS and Android games.
This time around five of the six games to get the nod are accessible on smartphones with the other being the popular 3DS hit Super Mario 3D Land, also EA’s Dead Space looks a good bet and Gold Award-winning puzzlers like Peggle, Blueprint, Quarrel, The Nightjar and Magnetic Billiards are all in the running. Do you have an idea, which games will come out top of their category?
