here you can say your points on asperger syndrome and autism dont be offensive as there could be people with the said conditions on the forum and also i do have asperger syndrome and low levels of autism but although many are social outcasts we can be surprisingly intelligent

i say we as there are many people with them and i am in a school full of them

anyway post your comments on this and hopefully get the word about as most people say a large majority of autistic children/adults are 'retards' and 'freaks' among many other phrases i would rather not mention due to small childrens ears

I have a very close freind that works with Autistc people. Some of those people actually turn out extremly sucsessful in life. I have a freind also whose twin boys suffer from it and right now they are going through college to get a doctorate degree in physiology.

Some of them aren't so lucky though. They can become violent without notice and even go as far as doing things that are not for the faint of heart. Sad thing is they don't understand what they are doing and don't even know what the difference between right and wrong.

Ah, but Vossler, if they cannot properly communicate said things, how you can say that?

hmm most people in my school are like that too and some of them dont like others who have anger issues which may be beyond their control but can make people very angry and resentful towards them too especially the year 11s who are doing GCSE

Gatekpr where does vossler say that? it says that they cant understand and that is the sad thing as an autistic person myself i can relate to this

I wasn't referring to him actually saying what I just said, I was referring to them not knowing right from wrong and whatnot. If we cannot get inside of their heads and they lack the ability to communicate in a way that we can understand, how, exactly, do we know what they are thinking?

we dont they are very complex and very emotionally delicate also many people would consider their personality to be 'evil' because they cannot be quiet about certain things and are very literal such as if you said to an autistic person 'i am going to beat the shit out of you!' but not mean it they will automatically think you mean it and become scared of you and possibly distance themself from you

I won't try to hide the fact that I have autism. I won't. I'll embrace it. I think this thread was an incredible idea. Although disappointed I didn't start it, I'll gladly interact in it. So... what's up? I'm Kevin, and I have autism. Also, I am paralyzed from the waist down. I often have to sit at one of two places : my couch, or my computer desk. I'd appreciate if the questions were minimal, but, if you must, ask, and I will explain. So, yeah. I know what it's like. I'm just glad there's some others like me. I was beginning to think I was alone.

PS : I'm not a freak or anything, right?

Ogosh. One of my teachers once told me that she had a student with Asperger's syndrome and that she would sometimes grab scissors and chase other students, and that in one case, she did stab someone. =x

I actually know someone in my (in law) family who has a child with autism. It doesn't take an idiot to identify an autistic child. The kid is smart...really smart when he's playing. But...he's rolling over on 4 1/2 years old soon and he still has never said a single word. He has never spoken in his life. He doesn't respond to his own name. He does this thing where he rolls his head around constantly and shakes back and forth.
His parents took him to the doctor and recieved medicine which his mother overdoses him with so that he'll go to sleep and no one will notice. So...technically speaking the mother knows he has a dissorder, but she's too embarassed to seek help.

i try not to see autism as a disability, because some of them are pretty much geniuses... if most people can accept autistic people, then they'll probably be seen as gifted rather than having a disability

Maybe it isn't a dissability. Autistic kids could be phsycic and no one would know.
Labeling someone as "disabled" is basically labeling them as "something I don't understand" o_O

My mother works with children that have fairly advanced autism & I've had the pleasure of going to work with her for an entire Summer. :)

I find autism fascinating. In some cases it leads to Idiot Savantism (where a person who can do almost nothing can do one thing - like playing the piano - extremely well). I find it interesting that someone with advanced autism, being unable to express themselves normally, compensate by being able to express themselves through art.

I don't see autism as a disability at all. Autistic people think just as any human would, the problem lies in reactions & responses. Some of the autistic children I've worked with have heard me say "Hey there, what's your name" & understood exactly what I've said, but have been unable to express that understanding & instead stare blankly or seems to be inside their own mind.

And this in turn, compounds the often-found anger in autistic people. How frustrated & angry would you be if you had your same mind, but were unable to communicate normally?

autistic children almost always have poor social skill and can be VERY sensitive to the slightest thing and if you said to an autistc child "i am going to punch your lights out" they will think one of two things either 1.oh my god hes gonna hit me i am scared (or something like that) or 2. but i dont have lights what do you mean?

because every autistic child is different they can have many different reactions to the same phrase but many can be famous and very successful like bill gates or einstein

the problem with people today is that nobody can understand autistic children because there is not enough awareness about autism in the world but autistic children can have great ideas but are unable to put those ideas to paper because they cannot express what they think openly and are often lacking in social interactions etc

I knew someone who was autistic a couple of years back but I never understood what autism actually was...

i have only started noticing the signs of autism after i was diagnosed with it it was annoying though i was diagnosed two years ago and when i was origionally on a statement (with no diagnosis) everyone knew something was wrong with me but did not know what exactly and when i improved in school i was taken off the statement and everyone from then thought i was just a naughty boy when really it was down to the fact i was misunderstood

Aren't Asperger's Syndrome and Autism on completely opposite ends of the spectrum?

I had to read a novel for class, "The Dangerous Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" and the lead character was a 15 year old boy who suffered from AS. It was interesting to read as I have never heard of AS and it was sad to see how people treated him in this story. He was a very clever character and we had a discussion about it.

I remember 1 member saying how they would have gotten frustrated with the character because how does 1 deal with someone with AS. I thought it was just to treat them like everyone else, normal. But someone told me we couldnt do that as some AS suffers react differently to others.
