One of my absolute favorite games of all time is Marvel vs Capcom 2. I haven't heard of a new game to be added in the vs. series since a rumor spread the internet almost 4 years ago about a sammy vs capcom game that sammy was producing. There hasn't been any information regarding this since. With the recent new systems release with an even greater capacity for graphics and sales down on the most recently produced 2D fighters, do you think any companies are going to chance producing a console 2D fighter?

yes, cause they are still making them overseas. The bigger question is whether or not they'll come to the US cause its not a big genre here due to no arcades

The Japanese still make them although sadly not Capcom, and SNK haven't made a great game in years imo.

The only 2D Fighter I think that's on its way here is SSBB on the Wii which should be a blast but it won't be Street Fighter III.

Isnt Street Fighter suppose to have some great anniversary thiis year. Im sure we'll see something

Knowing Capcom this will be a compilation of some sort with a selection of their games, that is if they bother to do something. It wouldn't be something new.

In a perfect world it'll be a selection of their Vs. titles, the Marvel and SNK ones would do fine for me.

But yea, that has nothing to with the Street fighter series per se. What I'm hoping for, along with the rest of Steret Fighter fans, is that Street Fighter 3 will actually f*cking come out. The one they said a long time ago.

Compilation wise, they're is nearly a compilation Street Fighter on every platform so I hope its not a compilation.....though
SNK vs Capcom vs Marvel would be sweeeeeeeeeeet

Actually, I dont know what I meant. They had some rumor a while ago

And I might have to disagree about being the best. I myself am more of a fan of Guilty Gear

Forgot about GG there, nice games and I like the character designs but never really got into them for some reason. Is that still being released for home consoles in the future? I can only mind seeing they were on handhelds now.

Well if you're into importing then there's no shortage of 2D fighters. Hokuto No Ken ( Fist Of The North Star ), which was made by the mob who did Guilty Gear, is getting a release this month. Arcana Heart has being doing pretty well in arcades as well so there's no reason that shouln't get a release on console as well. The King Of Fighters series is still going, with XI being a big return to form for me, easily my favourite since KOF 2000.

But if you live in the States then you have the problem of Sony's anti-2D stance, that means pretty much any 2D game has to be hi-res ( a la Guilty Gear ) or part of a bundle pack.

Then why the hell can no one make a high-res 2d fighting game other than Guilty Gear. Seriously, I'm sick of seeing crazy low-res sprites on a somewhat modern console.

Damn, Fist of the North Star looked pretty good. Too bad it's import only.

KOF XI? I thought the newest one was the KOF 2006, which was the 3d one. Or is KOF XI also import only?

And since were at it, what are your guys favorite 2d fighting series?
Guilty Gear for me

Stupid fucking Sony and their 2D bias ways.

Street Fighter III gameplay + Capcom/SNK Characters + GG Graphics = Godly Game

Probably of no surprise to you to learn that I am a Street Fighter fanatic.

lol. Ok, name one high-res 2d game on Xbox that was good. The closest I can think of are the same low-res fighters that appeared on PS2. But, at least PS2 had some good 2d games and supported the 2d like styles like cel-shading. Xbox....not so much.

Indeed godly game. Seriously, 2d fighters are on their last legs in america so I hope they release a giant compilation sooner or later with all the major companies that love making them involved.

...and not surprised, lol

This is where I curse SNK of America ( or whoever's decision it was ) to name that game KOF 2006. It's only known as 2006 in America, in Japan it's KOF: Maximum Impact 2 and as far as I'm aware that's what it's to be released as in Europe. XI is the latest in the 2D line of the series. 2006 is fun enough but XI eclipses it, pure and simple.

Guilty Gears sprites may look nice but the animation doesn't seem quite up to scratch, Street Fighter 3 in general is a much nicer game to look at: its characters are really well drawn and probably still the best animated in a fighting game to date....and it plays better than Guilty Gear.

And my favourite series?.....I was brought up on a staple diet of Street Fighter but my alliegance has shifted to King Of Fighters. I still love Street Fighter Alpha 3, SF3: 3rd Strike and the original Marvel Vs. Capcom ( I'm not at all fond of the second to be honest ) but ever since getting hooked on King Of Fighters 2000 I've drifted from their ways. The characters seemed to have a greater variety for the most part, super moves were usually different attacks rather than a slightly upgraded special move...it just seemed fresh after years of playing Street Fighter. The fact that King Of Fighters XI is something special hammered it home to me last year that I'm on the SNK side of the fence now.

Never had an Xbox so whether or not it had a 2D fighter doesn't bother me although it did have the Anniversary Edition with SFIII so it had something at least.

Only play SFIII and SFA 3 really these days on the Dreamcast, PS2 had a fair few worthwhile games on it like the SFA Collection but I don't enjoy fighters using that controller.

Hmm. I should look for that then. Thanks for the heads up. And on the Strret Fighter is better looking...I'll have to kindly disagree but I totally respect your opinion Sun and Steel. But I don't want to turn this into a
KoF vs GG vs SF war. I mean, I've had enough of arguing which series is better in the 3d realm (teeken vs Virtua Fighter) and I'm not ready to start debating the finer points of these 2d fighters cause theyre all good in my opinion. The only reason I like GG better is the fastpace and character design.

Every guy has their own opinion so don't worry about saying what you prefer, I'm not going to slate someone just because they have a different opinion from mine. I'd only have a problem if you slated it for no reason at all.

All three series are good in the end anyway.

It's cool.:P
Me and my friends tend to go through patches of playing all of them anyway, there aren't many 2D fighters, or fighting games in general, that I dislike. The only thing that annoys me about Guilty Gear is the amount of "upgrades" they've released as opposed to proper sequels.

Yeah I miss a decent 2d beat em up. The nostalgia packed in them all is always a major selling point for me

Yea, it's funny. We have to play rock, paper, scissors to figure out which game my buddies will play. I'm the best at Guilty Gear, Dan is the best at KoF, and Tanner is the best at Street Fighter. So it's like, yea I get to lose cause we're playing the game I'm not good at.

Damn, I wish we still had arcades so I had someone decent to play against
