Are 2D fighters dead?

I wish more than anything they'd release a new Vs. game...those always did moderately well on console and arcade fronts, and I played those to no end (I played MVC2 on Dreamcast till the 'timer' bar maxed out on 99:99:59, and still bust it out every now and then when I head home) I wish that Capcom would take one more stab at a new SF game with completely makeover and facelift, except for in gameplay. They really had that aspect down since the beginning.

The Vs. games are very unlikely to continue ( outside of Card Clash ). Capcom relinquished the Marvel license quite some time ago and it could afford to do the SNK crossovers because SNK were bankrupt at the time. SNK are back in business however and whilst I don't think either have ruled out the possibilty of another certain press statements hinted that a crossover was far from the first on the minds of either company.

I also think they should resurrect the Vs series. I recently got MvC2 and SF:Alpha Anthology, and they are better than most 3D fighters that I have played. It would be good to see Capcom release an entirely new SF as well as bringing back the Vs series.

I love the old 2D games such as the old capcom games like street fighter. I'm into both really, and I tend to play the 3D games more, but I love the 2D just as much.

A big bump maybe but there's a bit of news if you're still into the 2D fighters. Anyone who's followed the Japanese arcade scene recently may have noted a game called Arcana Heart. It's got an all-female cast and is a bit "fan-service" at times but the game looks solid enough. Apparently there's quite a few infintes though, which hopefully will have been worked on for the update Arcana Heart Full ( A bit like Guilty gear XX Slash or #Reload ). And there's also meant to be a proper sequel on the way, so with all this there should hopefully be a console release at some point.

Ha.
Yea, looks like a bit of fan service. Its hard to judge these games by screenshots though. Do you know who the publisher or developer is?

Anyways, this will probably most definitely be an import game.

In other news, the next Street Fighter game is suppose to have a massive gfx/art update. Its supposedly suppose to look better than Guilty Gear, but they dont have any screenshots yet. However, they said they are aiming to make it look like the Udon comics. I may have gotten that wrong. I saw this news a little bit ago.

Anywho, FINALLY! Seriously, I'm sick of taking sh*t from graphics whores because the art isn't hi-res. Can't wait to see some screenshots.

If you check around Youtube it shouldn't be too hard to find match vids of Arcana Heart, they were quite plentiful last time I checked. The developer is...Yuki if I remember, they were responsible for one of the Samurai Spirits/Samurai Showdown games. Haven't heard anything about a publisher since it's still arcade only for the moment.

Although it's nice to see Street Fighter Super getting a lick of paint I can't help but have that same sense of "...I wish it were a NEW Street Fighter game". Congrats to Capcom, they're doing a good job of trying to reclaim the King Of Remakes title from Square Enix.

EDIT: Here's a few Arcana Heart videos, they show 6 of the characters -

For me they are, but last time I checked the genre wasn't dead, I mean Dead or Alive 4 sold well and was rated very well. Or was that not a 2D fighter? I can't remember. >>

Yes, they're dead. I can't recall seeing a 2D fighter in the last several years...

Unfortunate seeing as 2D fighters are better than 3D fighters.

I don't know, maybe if the NeoGeo Battle archive collections do well enough in the US SOny of America may soften their stance on 2D stiff and let SNK field more of their offerings. That's in a pretty far-fetched reality though, I don't think Ryuuko No Ken is the choice of enough people in the US to merit any confidence.

Or you can maybe hope GGXX Accent Core gets a random release. Funny, with all the new moved and system additions in AC, if Arc had just pushed the boat a little and given us a couple more characters and storyline plots then it could have been a full sequel, nevere mind another revision to XX.
