He tends to have a low opinion of academic asymptotics. I tend to have the same for similar reasons.
I don't think you're in any way smart, really.
Its funny that you would actually believe such a ridiculous thing.
edit -- Actually, I shouldn't say that. You are smart. I would be uncool not to acknowledge it.
Bram Cohen is not famous, not that it would matter if he was. Many people are wealthier than I am, including; Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and the pets of eccentric millionaires. Also it's weird that you should mention wealth as something that matters in judging people's worth, considering you are the one who pretends to be poor to find out what people really think of him. He is not more educated than I am from what I read, though that is also hardly relevant. You will find many rich people who have been given the greatest education money can buy, and are still not very intelligent at all.
Now we're on to your final point, that Bram is more intelligent than I am. Well intelligence is incredibly subjective and incredibly difficult to define. Someone might be a genius in one field and a fool in another. Kary Mullis developed PCR to an extent that it became an indispensable biological tool, he also promotes AIDS denial and Astrology. This isn't a reflection on anything Bram has said or done, I am just pointing out that it is difficult to flat out say one person is more intelligent than another.
Now onto the words themselves, you still used them out of context. For the sake of clarity let's change Asymptotic to another word , math for example.
"The lack of any concrete numbers at all shows the typical academic hand-wavy 'our math is good, we don't need to worry about reality' approach"
compared to
"I can't say I have much love for academic math"
It just doesn't make any sense the way you structured your sentence, and even he was taking some liberty with how he used the word. All of that aside, I can accept that he has problems with the way formal education operates. After all he did drop out of college. There is a key difference between him and you though. He dropped out of college because it was not right for him, look what he has accomplished. He has made a lot of his life and done what he wanted to do. You claim to think much the same about academics as he does, but what have you accomplished? From what I hear you have only had menial jobs laying floor, working in a grocery store, and somewhere with stringent ketchup packet protocol. It sounds like you are simply claiming formal education is not for you, to avoid the fact you haven't done miuch with your life thus far
If you've heard of the group called anonymous, I was a member of anonymous for about 5 minutes before I changed my mind and decided not to join. Its not a big deal. It was awhile ago back in 2007 or 2008 & I don't have ties with them anymore.
That's more or less the reason I can get info on people sometimes if I decide I want to & why I can answer some of the tech related questions posted here no one bothers with.
If you bothered reading the original post, I clearly stated I was a n00b & never deviated from that.
