There hasn't actually been a thread on this I don't think, plus I've recently become aware after talking to someone (not saying who) of the sheer ignorance of what's going on the gaming world, so this can serve as an update to those of you who don't keep up.

I find it highly amusing that the 360 is quickly becoming an RPG console, while the PS3 is left behind. It's a wonderful slap in the face to Sony fanboys, and the 360 isn't just getting American RPGs either, but JRPGs. So far, it's had some really noteworthy RPGs:

Eternal Sonata
Elder Scrolls IV
Mass Effect
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon

Those last two are especially a big deal, since it just goes to show Sakaguchi has enough faith in the 360 to put his RPGs on it. And some very noteworthy RPGs set to come out in the future are:

Tales of Vesperia
Fallout 3
The Last Remnant

Fable 2
Alpha Protocol (also for PS3 and PC)

If that last one doesn't clue people in that the PS3 is faltering, nothing will. Square Enix is putting Last Remnant on the PS3 too...but OMG, it's not an exclusive :wacky: So that's two pretty important RPG companies (Mistwalker, SE) putting faith in the 360. Now, what are the RPG's the PS3 has?

Elder Scrolls IV
Enchanted Arms
(which is also on the 360, and isn't that good anyway)
Disgaea 3 (although it hasn't hit America yet)
Folklore (it's really more of an action-RPG)

I might be missing some, but those are the only noteworthy ones. Now, here are the big ones set to come out:

The Last Remnant
Fallout 3
Final Fantasy XIII collection
(big deal, obviously)
White Knight Chronicles (this one is actually a big deal too, it's being developed by Level 5 and it's a PS3 exclusive)
Valkyria Chronicles

So while the PS3 is going to slowly catch up in good RPG content...since the 360 has got a good headstart (and is cheaper to make games on and sells better), I'm speculating that there's likely to be even less exclusivity than there is now. You should also beware the Sony fanboys, because they'll just BS facts to make themselves feel good about buying a fail console. There's been talk that the PS3 has now caught up to the 360 in sales, but apparently that isn't true. Here's a chart comparing Grand Theft Auto 4 sales on both consoles, and guess which one sold more?

That's riiiight, the 360. Now if you guys wanna see a nifty chart comparing sales of all three current-gen consoles, go here. Not surprisingly, the Wii is in the lead, with the PS3 at last place. Well, I'm done with this post now. I hope this has educated you all of the current standings of the RPG genre, console sales and shot down any resident Sony fanboys.

tl;dr version: 360 has better RPG's currently, PS3 has trouble keeping exclusives, PS3 is last place in console sales, sucks to be a Sony fanboy.

The XBox 360 seems to get better and better when it comes to RPGs. I love Elder Scrolls IV and Blue Dragon. And I am HIGHLY excited about Tales of Vesperia and The Last Remnant. That being said...Final Fantasy is still on the PS3! But I see no reason to buy it for just one game. I'll wait two years for the price to go down if I have to. I'm just glad I have an XBox 360 right now.

Yeah, what happens when handheld consoles are included, though?

To me it seems more like...XBOX 360: Finally getting some console-exclusive RPGs :P

Anyways...PC RPGs should probably stick to PCs...Elder Scrolls is much better w/a keyboard & mouse, I believe...*shrugs*...but w/e's good, I guess...I think it's cool that companies are broadening their horizons by either multi-platforming (which is kind of harder to do w/this gen) or doing various unique projects on each of the systems...Though it'll certainly put a dent in gamers' wallets...V_V

Aye, more and more good RPGs keep coming out for the 360. As for XIII...well, Agito is coming out for the cell phone, so it remains to be seen if the other two keep their PS3 exclusivity. Either way, SE and Mistwalker are backing the 360 so the PS3 has some good competition RPG-wise.

Yeah, what happens when handheld consoles are included, though?

Handheld sales are a no-brainer, the DS is winning. RPG-wise...they're about equal as far as I can tell.

I stopped caring about which console is winning the "war" long ago. I bought the PS3 on the basis of it being more reliable, with exclusives that I actually cared about. That, and the Blu-Ray drive was also a factor.

In the end, all I care is that my console of choice gets good games, such as the ones you mentioned. I think that exclusives overall suck, though. Oh, and I prefer J RPGs in general, I'm not a fan of most Western RPGs.

Do note, that the PS3 version of GTA IV apparently sold more in Europe, where the PS3 has at least tied with the X360. And Playstation fanboys? A bit hypocritical, considering that you're acting like an XBOX fanboy yourself. If you're going to fantard over something, at least be honest about it. Please. :wacky:

You have to keep one thing in mind about the PS3 sales. Now that BluRay has won the 'high definition' contest, the sales of PS3s are going to be getting higher, since it's the cheapest BluRay player out there. So, with that, PS3 might begin to bridge the gap in sales with the 360.

As for the RPGs, I really couldn't get too into those games, except for Lost Oddysey, that game was rather fun. I'm just unfortunately a bit too stuck on the Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei RPG series to get too into the ones that XBox has to offer.

My PS3 has been nothing more than a paper weight over the last few months (seriously, I have it holding my school notes down for when I turn my fans on). My Xbox 360, on the other hand, gets a daily workout.

I never understood all the talk about the 360 lacking quality RPG titles. It's commonly branded a console good solely for shooter and sporting games. Doesn't look that way to me.

I meant if you plug in the handheld RPGs into the whole which company has how many RPGs thingy...I was just curious how many RPGs each company has total, I guess?

Well since I live in North America, I couldn't give a shit about sales in Europe :neomon:

Also, I'm not an Xbox fanboy either. I never even owned the original Xbox, and I don't have a 360. I just hate Sony fanboys and take much joy in seeing the 360 and Wii kick the shit out of it.

Ohh...hrmm, I'm not sure. I'd look into it but I don't care about handhelds. Perhaps someone else can look into that?

I'd say that's one major reason for the increase in sales, yes. Both consoles have their own unique USPs which the prospecting consumer will take into consideration. It's down to the masses of undecided casual gamers now, but all three consoles have comfortable userbases.
The results of this generation will, of course, influence the next generation, in that Sony and Microsoft may look to incorporate more motion sensing and interactivity technologies into their next consoles.

Also, I think blind Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft fantards are all the same flavour, just with different brands.

I don't want to see the PS3 do poorly (after all, I own one), but I do gain a certain amount of satisfaction from watching it sit around in last place in terms of unit sales.

All I heard prior to its release was how superior it was to the competition in almost every way--how amaaaaazing it was. I read pompous quotes from Sony representatives who basically said their success in the next generation of consoles would be unmatched. So I sorta enjoy watching the Wii and Xbox 360 lead the way for the time being.

It's the same sort of satisfaction I get when I watch the New York Yankees lose baseball games.

But yeah...great RPGs for the Xbox 360.

Of course. I don't want my investment in a PS3 to be a waste of money, either, and so far, it's turned out not to be. The only real problems are how expensive individual games (for both PS3 and X360) are, and the games drought at the moment.

Well of course, they're all tards. The one glaring difference is that the Nintenfags and Xbox fanboys have more things to back up their fandom.

Now as for that Blue Ray thing you mentioned before, I agree. The PS3 is likely to become a popular choice for a Blue Ray player, much like the PS2 was for DVDs. However, it might take a while to get rolling because there's still alot of people out there who simply won't benefit from high-def (i.e. they can't afford a $2000 TV and $30-$40 Blue Ray DVDs) or just don't care.

The tech is definitely superior, but they haven't marketed it very well. They kept bullshitting consumers by saying the motion sensor idea was original, that they couldn't put in Dual Shock without screwing with the motion sensor, they discontinued the 60 gig, 80 gig is temporarily discontinued, and even on the 60 gig there were compatibility issues. Honestly...if Sony wasn't treating their buyers like dirt and had different people running things, they'd probably be in lead.

Really, I don't think their customer service appears to be so much of an issue. It's that they've taken a risky strategy, made an initially very expensive product, and that the PS3 is still behind in terms of good games. So far, very few good exclusives have been released for the PS3, and games are still so expensive that you'd be wise to pick out only the distinguished cream of the crop, and not certain less known, unproven newcomers.
That'll change, but it makes me hungry for more.

While most of what you've aid is true to an extent it's sorta unfair to put down the PS3s sales next to a console that was both out for a larger amount of time and without serious competition. On the site you've linked to go to Chartz then Hardware from Launch and you'll see the below.

This shows that while the Wii has outsold the 360 on a ratio of just over 2:1 or so the PS3 and 360 are pretty much neck and neck and is now pulling ahead of it, that's of course the data of how much they sold in their lifetimes which is why the 360s is longer.

The PS3 has been outselling the 360 on a regular basis all year if you wish to look at the below link.

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?con...All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&start=39446&end=39572

Of course at this rate the PS3 will outnumber the 360 in 3 years or some shit but the PS3 has doing better than the 360 and that's without as many (if any) big exclusives as the 360 has given us. There's no way of telling how it'll go but Sony aren't out of it yet especially since they are doing better in Japan and possibly Europe now and they have their true killer titles to come out.

But it still stands atm that the 360 is the best console to get when looking at the current game collection that they have.

Jesus, lookit the little Wii go xD

So the PS3 and 360 are pretty much neck and neck now? Well I'll be damned. It probably has something to do with Ken Kutaragi stepping down as CEO.

Ya know, I wonder just how much of the PS3's sales (or lack thereof) have been affected solely by the slowdown in America's economy, and how it would have done if conditions were better. Probably better, I'd imagine...although the horrible launch still would have soured things for alot of people.

Yarly! Sony bragged about the PS3, how next-gen it was and the Blu-Ray and shit, and the Wii is beating them in sales. Hmm, does this remind anyone of Apollo Creed? Anyone?...>_>...Well, I believe in the next year or two the PS3 might surpass XBox sales...maybe even Wii sales :O

Exactly. That's why it's so satisfying to see them failing. They were so confident they were the greatest thing ever and failed to take into account that ZOMG gamers are sometimes poor and don't want to spend $600 on a console and $60 on crappy launch titles. Eventually I'm sure they'll break even with the others...but it'll take some doing. I would guess the biggest challenge they'd have is finding a reasonable price to sell it at that people are willing to pay, since they still need profit and so do game makers. But they'd better fix that compatibility issue too, thats bound to affect sales.

From my experience, they've done many updates to the PS3, and the emulation issue has largely disappeared, but not completely.

I bought my PS3 last August. Thought £425 was slightly expensive, but it was a deal well done. I might have saved £125 if I'd bought one later, but some sucker's gotta pay the higher price. If everyone just "waited", the PS3 would be dead by now.
You can now get a 40 GB version for £300. Can't say fairer than that for a next gen games console, multimedia hub, and Blu-Ray player in one. The price'll probably go down even more by autumn, though.

I'll point out now, for the most part, I'm a sony fanboy, but I do have all three of the current consoles.

Main reason I've kept my PS3 at university: I had more games for the PS2 when I brought it here.

Anyway, firstly, that blue-ray thing is currently...not an argument. I decided the other day to find out how much a blue-ray player was, and it came up at £200 (as the cheapest). That's about $400. So the PS3 is not the cheapest blue-ray player anymore (though it may have caused the prices to drop on them).

The hi-def disc thing is worth mentioning I suppose, but to be honest, everyone's still using dvds as far as I can tell, and even though I have a HD TV (was £300/$600), I only have one blue-ray disc, and I got that for signing up to the playstation network on the release date (woot).

RPG-wise...well yeah, I ain't bought an rpg yet for my PS3. I also haven't bought one for my X360. Possibly because I don't like the Oblivion series on consoles (as someone else mentioned earlier).

Personally, I don't like the idea of a war. I like competition between the companies, as it makes some great consoles and games appear that wouldn't have if just sony existed (I mean...no wii? It's insanity!). But I still gotta back the playstation, partially because its getting the lovely FF13 (which better be good or I'll sue SE or something...), and a few other titles I'm looking forward to. Though unless I hear of something great, I probably won't be buying any rpgs for any of the three consoles in the near future, and will continue to get my ps2 ones.

Maybe the 360 at a push, but I just don't really like using it that much...Not sure why, I just like it for going online with DOA's and GoW and Halo 3 and stuff, which is even more bizarre because I prefer the online capabilities of the PS3 (just lacking the games for it. Plus my connection ain't great, so Tekken seems to go...extremely slow...oh well).

Anyway, back to the topic at hand... I'm not that keen on most of those RPGs, and sales figures don't really bother me. I don't like the revised PS3, for the reason of its much lesser capabilities (and taking the higher-spec version off the market).

Oh, another thing, I haven't had any problems with backwards compatability. Only the silly Phantasy Star Universe, of which Phantasy Star and me have never been on good terms regarding memory data (thing got corrupted...much like how my GC PSO data got corrupted...damn Phantasy Star....)

Oh, Wii won't be beaten in sales. It's like...impossible! :P
