While much of the world's attention is focused on the Civil War going on in Libya, their hasn't been much attention concerning the Civil War in Côte d'Ivoire (aka Ivory Coast) between forces loyal to former president Laurent Gbagbo and forces loyal to the internationally-recognized President, Alassane Ouatarra.

The conflict has caused various human rights violations on both sides since the war began 3 weeks ago, while the United Nations try (and obviously fail) to protect the civilians in the country, yet roughly 500 people are dead and another thousand wounded, with a half a million Ivorians leaving the country.

Personally, I think the UN is being the UN in general. They are incapable, incompetent and unable to really do much of anything to do peacekeeping, since well, they have done a pretty piss poor job at Darfur.

It would be up to the 2 Sub-Saharan Regional Powers, Nigeria and South Africa, as well as France to really be an effective force in ensuring Ouattara's place as President of the Ivory Coast.

What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you think it's even worth the UN's time to fix this situation?

Being the UN in general?

More like, the League of Nations.

Honestly speaking, I do not know much about the events transpiring there, with the greater interest of my country's media on Japan's latest quake, and particularly it's aftermath. They love misery, and they love luridness - it earns.

Basing on what you described...

I would think that the situation is quite bad. Especially if the government of that country isn't showing enough oomph in dealing with the matter, and are essentially acting stupid in the entire affair... The UN ought to interfere, if they really mean to be the UN.
