[23/01] Tetsuya Nomura was ordered to design Lightning’s new outfit like “a leather body suit”

If you’ve been wondering about the inspiration for Lightning’s new outfit in Lightning Returns, look no further.


Speaking in an interview with Famitsu this week, character designer Tetsuya Nomura shared a few bits and pieces regarding his involvement in the upcoming title. The basic order for the design was to create something fashioned after “a leather body suit.” The image for the arms was to be modeled off of a spinal column, however the sunglasses and shield were possibly designed by another person.


Other design news has come about for newly revealed character Lumina as well. Her design, as well as the design for Lightning’s other costumes, were created by Toshiyuki Itahana of Final Fantasy IX fame.

I HAD been wondering, actually. One does wonder about the nature of insanity from time-to-time; it is human nature to be curious, after all, especially about the more unexpected and bizarre things.

Someone has been reading criticisms of Count Lightning's new look. "Ordered" was he? So it wasn't his idea? Nice try, Nomura. We all know how unbearably pushy Toriyama is, but I somehow doubt that he was standing over you with a whip, cracking it as you made his every fantasy a reality. Basing the arms off a spinal column makes a terrifying amount of sense, though: Lightning could probably crush a man's spine with one of her beefy, mannish hands; she makes Predators look like ponies. I expect Toriyama scribbled the sunglasses on after he'd had some lunch or something. Whoever designed the shield clearly has no idea of what a shield is for, or what one looks like...so that might have been Toriyama as well. Who knows.
