I've been browsing these charts, and if they are accurate, it looks like no game has the strength to sell more than 500k copies in their launch week anymore.

That being so, comparing FFXIII-2 numbers with past FF numbers is not adequate. That doesn't mean that SE isn't screwed, but maybe it is just that, no matter what, FF will never repeat its past success, and will return to pre-FFVII levels.

Well it does seem to be a problem with the Japanese gaming audience, not the game.

According to VGChartz Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) is 5th most pre-ordered game in USA. People have already pre-ordered 239 334 copies including both Xbox 360 (60,663) & PS3 (178,671) versions. Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released in United States on 31th January and 3rd February in Europe!

1 Mass Effect 3 X360 381,752
2 Diablo III PC 345,570
3 Kinect Star Wars X360 187,562
4 Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier X360 182,156
5 Final Fantasy XIII-2 PS3 178,671

But of course, preorders do not determine a game's quality at all.
It just shows that people are still interested in Final Fantasy outside Japan.

Or it could be the fact that there are much more preorder bonuses for the game.

I just want FFXIIVersus. ;(

SE needed to not waste resources on a sequel to a game that wrapped up nicely. If they wanted a continuation, make a manga.( I mean really a shock that it had low sales?:domo:)

They've invented interesting adjustments in each installment. Go to the drawing board and combine them in a way that captures a broader audience. I would rather forgo the graphics in order to have a consistent sprawling world.

The difference between Final Fantasy in Japan and Final Fantasy in North America and Europe is that in the former is their base audience, the hardcore Final Fantasy fans that are going to purchase the game whether it is pre-ordered or not which ultimately looks as if it is becoming less likely. In the latter two, Final Fantasy seems to becoming more and more appealing to a niche market who are more likely to pre-order. I can't see it selling well in the West, at all.

I think the game will sell well in the west. The versus fans, who are distainful of it will buy it as they're tired of waiting and want their FF fix.
People like me will buy it as it seems more of a traditional FF/japanese rpg with towns, npcs and minigames as well as nonfighting oriented quests.

So I do expect it will do well if it's well written and makes sense.

Well I won't be one of those people. The second I finished watching an XIII-2 trailer I already knew I would not be buying the game and nothing has changed since then, if anything my stance has grown stronger.

It's hard enough to even call it a Final Fantasy, let alone like it. Apologies, but the prospect of pretty-in-pink Serah (Who in my opinion is never main character material) fighting along to rap battle music doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. It just reiterates my feelings more on why I dislike XIII in general.

I rate it with 2 packets of monster munch and a curly wurly and will gladly content myself with older FF's till the day a more promising one arrives, that being Versus XIII.
