Square Enix held an investors meeting in Japan where Yoichi Wada (President), Keiji Honda (Executive Vice President), and Yosuke Matsuda (CFO) answered audience questions.

One attendee asked if there were any plans for the Mana or, as its known in Japan, Seiken Densetsu series. Plans are for more ports of Mana and SaGa series games, but starting new series based on those franchises are not being considered at this time.

Two SaGa ports were released for the Nintendo DS in Japan, both were remakes of the Final Fantasy Legend games for Game Boy. The last new entry in the Mana series was Heroes of Mana, a Nintendo DS game released in 2007.

Huh, only just saw this after I suggested on the other news thread that a SaGa reboot would be a good idea. I do hope that's something that they at least consider in the future though, at the moment it does seem as though they've somewhat resigned to the notion that the series just won't take off outside Japan, and hence are only releasing the remakes to Japanese audiences.

Very disappointed about the Mana series though, I've been waiting for a new game for quite some time, particularly a 'main series' Mana game, since all the games since Legend of Mana have come across as being quite experimental. One piece of good news that can be taken from this though is that it might hint at a Seiken Densetsu 3 Western port (please?) or even better a remake, since both of the previous two games in the series have been remade/ported in some form or another.

Considering the direction Square is taking with it's games - this is a good thing.

Let it rest at peace.
