They are nothing.
Origionally Sqaure was going to put a lot more into FFVII than they anticipated the room would allow. Thus items like the copy of the "Masamune" "Super Sweeper" and "1/13 Soldiers" items were introduced with no purpose. They were to be included in side quests that never got finished by the developers.
Part of the myt5hs surrounding it are the ressurection of Aerith and addition to Sephiroth to your party. So they left the itmes in game to possible be able to do that. But on final playtests revealed that would affect the story/game in a way Square didn't want the direction in.

On a side not how come I can't see my own signature when I view the threads?
