Final Fantasy XIII-2′s ending doesn’t refer to a sequel

A nudge at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2 has raised hopes for a further sequel, but it’s time to dash them. Minor spoilers ahead.

According to Andriasang‘s translation of an Impress Watch report from the Taipei Game Show, director Motomu Toriyama was asked to explain the “To Be Continued” message at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2′s main story.
Toriyama said the message refers to two things – the many secret Paradox endings players can unlock through side-content, and plans to continue releasing DLC.
Asked what the 1st Production Department is up to now the game has shipped, Toriyama said the team is working on the afore-mentioned DLC, including an upcoming Lightning story chapter.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is available now on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Quick Shots: Final Fantasy XIII-2 screens show a gorgeous game

Square Enix has released a new batch of screenshots to celebrate the launch of Final Fantasy XIII-2 in the UK today, and as one would expect from a FF game, they are drop dead gorgeous – even if they are just showing combat. Say whatever you will about the series’ gameplay or storylines over the years, there’s no denying it has always been one of the more visually pleasing franchises out there. This time out, the sequel to FFXIII puts players in the shoes of Lightning’s sister Serah as she a Noel, a hunter from the future, journey across the boundaries of time and ultimately come face-to-face with antagonist Caius Ballad and his interesting hair decor. It’s out on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The still doesnt explain the ciffhanger. I saw the paradox endings on youtube, still didnt make sense to me.

This ^

Uhmmm........ what the bullcrap ?!!?!

I'm so lost and confused right now....

:damon:

Its looking more and more likely that there will be a XIII-3 to clear things up. I hope not though, im about sick of this story.

While Toriyama did mention that we can look forward to DLC and the paradox endings, he didn't actually say that DLC will conclude or clear things up as far as that cliffhanger go's. XIII-3 could still very well be a possibility. God help us all if it does come because people are just sick of it. FFXIII-2 didn't even clear it's first shipment of 850,000 copies in Japan. It's not known for a fantasy to not exceed 1 million upon release. Sequel or not. This just go's to show you that nobody cares all that much for XIII-2(at least in Japan) because sales weren't that great.

I can't imagine FFXIII-3 will get any love from anybody and it will sell poorly. People are just over it and want to move on. How much of Gran Pulse can we take? o_O

Id rather have a XIII-3 at this point. I also dont think the DLC will resolve things. I think it will clear some stuff up hopefully, but that's about it.

Here is my take on the whole FFXIII thing. It has a very very rich background. It's really interesting, but with the games, you dont get the whole picture, or at least very well. I enjoyed both games, and the ending of FFXIII-2 really struck me as awesome. I like where they went with it. But it leaves things way open, and I hate stories being left open, so Id definitely like to see a XIII-3.

It's sold 2 million worldwide as of now essentially. Alot of assets were reused so you can bet they got a ton of money off of it. Plus with DLC costumes that people will buy, pretty much pure profit. They have every reason to release a third part since it will more than likely sell. People like to act that it wont, but it would.

And I feel it deserves to. While not the greatest in the series, it is still solid. Id take it over 1,2,3, and 5 any day of the week

I wouldn't mind an ff13-3, i thought 13-2's game play was a better experience and had more fun than 13. If they continue in that direction I am ok with it, and ofcourse fixing the plot so that things make sense and have a real ending.

Is the 3rd time gonna be a charm? I don't care for a XIII-3, i just want to move on and many other do as well. Toriyama cant write a children book so the story would also be questionable if they continue. Gameplay is alright but if you don't have a good story, it can easily be dismissed. Look at XII-2, i can't imagine how anybody would be satisfied with that story wise when we are given a cliffhanger like that. If anything, i would feel cheated and many people have told me they have felt cheated.

Even though the gameplay is good.. a perfect example of what happened with XIII-2 would be like reading an awesome book only to find out that the last couple of chapters are missing at the end of it. Why even bother to care anymore? o_O

Doesn't anybody wanna see new protagonists and new worlds that haven't been revealed yet that has nothing to do with the Fabula Nova Crystalis mythos? I know i do. At least Versus XIII looks promising and has different characters, not to mention it has a different director. I know it stil has the same mythos but it doesn't matter because the purpose of having Toriyama(FFXIII,FFXIII-2), Tabata(Type-0) and Nomura(Versus) was to have all of these different directors was to make their own interpretation of the FNC mythos. We all know what Toriyama gave us. FF-Type-0 is the best selling SE PSP game of all time(Yes, it sold more than Crisis Core & Dissidia). Now all we have to wait for is Versus and see how this turns out with Nomura behind everything.

I care about the FF franchise and i don't want to see it dissipate before my eyes because of poor direction and bad business decisions.

I get it Setz- as I said I would only want it if they continue to improve. One reason is I feel like FF13vs is never gonna happen and 15 is way out in the distance, so a 13-3 would be quick and hold me over.

But I have no problem with your position.

I'm just very passionate about Final fantasy. :P People also have to remember that development didn't actually begin with FFvXIII until 2008. The only mistake Square Enix made was announcing it too early. Versus is coming and we will hear about it soon. I've been hearing talk about Versus never coming and such, it is not true, Nomura and the KH team have been very hard at work on this title and have been experimenting with the PS3 hardware for quite some time now. Not to mention that they have implemented the Luminous engine to change the lighting and they just want to deliver a high quality product for the consumer, They've also changed the meeting between Noctis and Stella where they are talking from real time to CGI. So they are just trying to make it better. They can take all the time in the world for all i care. It's coming and it's gonna be good.
