...oh, but you can't play it yet!
Satoshi Kitade, a programmer on the game team, made a significant post today on the Japanese side of FFXV's Official Forums. There he corroborates with earlier statements that the game has now reached pre-beta stage.
This essentially means that the team can now effectively play through the game from start to end, can take a wider look at the overall look of what the final product may look like, and be ready to make adjustments and polish before it can go gold presumably later in 2016. In addition, the first half of the game is more or less completed.
“We’re at the point where we can play the game in its entirety from start to finish...[f]rom this, everyone on the development team can get an overall view on the game.
"The first half of the game is finished with the quality of a final product, and you get the sense you’re playing it in its final form.”
As for a release date, it will be announced in a special March event (the date of which hasn't yet been disclosed either!). They have also emphasised in recent Active Time Reports that the game will be a 2016 release.
