Do you believe this ?

Maybe it's too soon to say.Maybe an error was made. But let's assume for the sake of discussion it is true.

It would make time travel possible as well as faster than light travel possible.
An obvious tie in to FFXIII-2.rotfl.

The nearer stars could be reachable a lot sooner than most experts thought.
Alpha Centauri, Tau Ceti, 61 Cygni C, Epsilon Indi, etc etc the list goes on.

I certainly hope it's true.:highfive:

Okay, so this bit here

"In Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, nothing can travel faster than light -- 300,000 kms, or 186,000 miles, per second -- because its mass would become impossibly infinite."

I get. But how in the hell does breaking this limit make time travel possible? I don't understand why it would be different than breaking a (albeit much faster) sound barrier.

Help?

I am not sure...

as I am not a physicist.

According to the article, one physicist from Britain said, if this is true, you would be able to send "information" into the past.
Of course information could be a person.
shrugs.

We don't know if it's true.It has to be validated, meaning other labs have to be able to reproduce it.

Some people have speculated it's not ftl but the particle is slipping into and out of other dimensions as it travels.Which , if true, would open up another ball of wax. Potentially communication with other dimensions.
Other universes.

shrugs.

Hopefully we'll see other articles written by physicists who will speculate what this means if true.:jon:

Yeah I saw this news on tv and I was like wtf....

Last time they said for certain that it would be impossible...now it can happen.
It was neutrino's and what if there would be a way for Aliens to harness the power of Neutrino's and shift back and forth through time/space/dimensions whahaha :D

Even if this ends up being true, what do you expect to change? It will not really impact our daily lives, and gravity or something wont be disproven because of it. Most likely we will simply revise the natural laws slightly to incorporate it.

For now though, this describes the situation perfectly

well..the physical sciences need a big breakthrough.
I do read a lot of science articles and you would be amazed at the advances being made in medical and the biological sciences. But scarcely a peep about any new discoveries being made in physics, chemistry or similar hard sciences.

We really need fusion power for example to replace oil and coal but so far nothing. There was a claim of a fusion discovery made a several years ago but it turned out to be a rather embarrassing scientific error made by a couple of chemists in Utah.

So really need a major discovery along those lines and my hope is that this will lead to something more.

Oil companies would not like it.
I think there are alternatives, but some group is not condoning the use of it and would never make it happen so soon.

Maybe even illuminati. muwhahaha.

As much as I like xkcd, his cynicism can be a bit grating. Anyhow, It certainly won't affect our lives as we know it now, but it will be a large point of contention in science, and since science is all about finding out how things work, it will affect us indirectly if it's true.

EDIT: on second thought, i'm not much of a fan of xkcd. I never visit the website, I just randomly encounter the comics on other sites.

Every experiment ever is repeated many times to ensure it is an observable phenomenon and not just a fluke. Nothing new here once again, neutrinos have laws that govern them regardless of whether they are 'normal' or not. I do not understand why people are so ready to believe that everyone till now has been wrong

Too many interpret the term scientific law as to imply matter and energy are obligated to conform to abstracts written in textbooks. If a textbook says neutrinos can't travel faster than light, neutrinos must obey the law or receive a ticket, I s'pose.

In reality, its the other way around. Scientific laws conform to observed standards. Mistakes are common due to heavy reliance upon subjective and arbitrary interpretation of data and limited data sets.

Science itself is no absolute imperative & things are constantly changing as we update our knowledge base.

Yes exactly, science is a series of statements made about things we can observe and test. Even if our current laws that govern neutrinos are wrong, there is still a set of laws that govern neutrinos. If at the minute we have laws that neutrinos disprove, then those are no longer laws

Not a matter of wrong.
Neutrinos supposedly are bound by the same laws as other particles. If not...then there's something different about them that needs to be explained.

11/18/2001:

Confirmed by Cern btw.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15791236

Other labs will be looking to confirm it as well.

Maybe FTL is on the horizon, rotfl.
