What FF do you recommend for me?

I'm going to be honest, in that I have played every FF main series game except for the PS2 games, yet, although I have gotten very close, I have never beaten one.

It kind of gets to me sometimes. I LOVE Final Fantasy, yet I haven't completed one. There's always something that comes up that I get caught in, like another video game or something. Then, I just never get back to playing that FF game.

It kind of gets to me because it makes me feel like a poser, or less of a gamer whenever I talk about FF. I want to beat one.

Which one should I play first? I haven't played that much of V, IV, or IX, and I've never played X, XI, or XII. I've never played XIV either, but it's not important, of course.

What's an FF game I should play? It can be any game, even if I have played it before.
Also, if you suggest a game, can you give me some tips on important things in the game?

Go for 10 since you haven't played it! It's great, although what Tidus lacks Auron makes up for. (You prob got no clue what I'm talking abotu but you'll see!)

Kinda hard to recommend you a title when you don't really give what you're looking for in a game. Anyway, you can never go wrong with some Final Fantasy IV.

I would start with IV and work your way up to XII. This way you can experience how FF has changed. And don't even bother with the online ones. They are garbage.

The really old ones (I-III) are NOT worth playing. They are far too basic by contemporary standards to really hold up. V is also generally considered to be for "hardcore fans" only, and because you haven't completed a single FF title, you're not. The most gripping and straightforward in the game is probably Final Fantasy X, so maybe that game will keep you till the end. XII is also good if you like a lot of sidequests and more action-packed gameplay, however because it is so long (probably the longest FF) you may not be able to finish it.


Avoid the online titles (FFXI and FFXIV). Though XI is good, nobody plays it anymore, and XIV, though new, has been widely panned by critics so it has a very small fanbase (not a good thing for an MMO).

I think you should start from 7 and work your way up to 12 (don't bother with 13, it's garbage)

If you don't want to start from 7 then I recommend 9. It's my fav FF game, it's very solid. Solid story, solid characters, beautiful music and the graphics are very good for a PSOne game!

I would start with I or IV. If you decide to start with I, you can skip II and III since I don't think they are very friendly in terms of gameplay.

I would recommend not starting somewhere in the middle though, with games like VII. Play the old games first, then move to VII. When you do get to VII though, I would highly recommend ignoring any comments about the game, in terms of how good or bad the game is. You would enjoy the game much more if you simply form your own opinion on it.

Personally, I'd also ignore when people tell you to not try XIII. I say give it a shot, you might like it. Reading reviews for a game isn't always a good thing. Just because other people don't like it doesn't mean that you wont. I would never tell anyone to not play a particular game. However, I would say that XI and XIV are two you could skip since they are online only, but if you want to play them, that's your call.

Playing them in order will allow you to see the progression the series has taken in terms of gameplay systems. Other than that, there is no real reason to play them in order, expect some of the later games make minor references to previous games (for example, Cloud and Squall are referenced in IX, I think)

I'd say 10. It's many people's favorite of the series, and it is a game that, IMO, you can play through it without getting bored. So I'd say 10.

If you call around 2000 players per server nobody then sure, it's an absolute graveyard! And I've heard nothing but positive things about the changes made to FFXIV, it's gathering some new players back and everything.

The old school Final Fantasys can be just as fun as the new ones. They laid the ground for what RPGs are today and to say they are not worth playing is like saying that Final Fantasy X is the most gripping one of them all.

The most gripping and straightforward in the game is probably Final Fantasy X

I don't know what to recommend personally, but I can tell you what to avoid, which is FF13 and FF14. Those are horrible games. I think maybe aiming towards the PlayStation era, with FF7, FF8, and FF9. Though I think FF10 would be a best start for you, because you can save anywhere you want and player health always gets redone. It's a little linear, so you won't have any problems getting lost, and the storyline should get you hooked.

So yeah, FF10.

I can't tell if you're joking or not because in my copy of FFX neither of those ever happens.

XII. Go with XII, it's easily the best of the lot. A complex and interesting storyline that goes beyond the individual characters and mercifully lacks the crappy love plot, the most involving battle system of the series (real time > turn based) with the ability to set up your own AI thanks to the Gambit System, and it's just so much more fun than the others. If you can ignore Vaan - which is very easy to do, since he does nothing - the game is extremely enjoyable.

I'm going to echo the sentiments about XIII - avoid it like the plague it is. No storyline, shit characters, absymal voice acting and soundtrack, about the only thing redeemable about the game is that its a fast-paced, linear bore-fest that more or less plays itself...unlike FFIX, which is slow, dull and expect you to pay attention to what is essentially the most boring and poor excuse for a cast in existence.

I'm just going to save a whole rant about what game you must play and why, and I'll just tell you to play all the games you can. In the end it's you who decides which one was the most worthy playing, I guess. I haven't played myself all of the games, since I'm halfway VIII and later gonna start IV, but I'm still going to play all the FF games I can. You can do the same.

I would recommend that. I have played them all...at least of the main series. The only ones I have not beaten are III, IX, and XII. I'm not counting XI or XIV though. In XII, I'm at the point where I could go ahead and beat it if I wanted

Guys, like I said, I have played Final Fantasy before. Like I've said, I have just never completed one. I am a huge fan. I have played XIII, I didn't list that one as one of the games I didn't play. I have played VII, know what it's about. I've gotten very far in it, as I have gotten far in others too.
What I'm trying to say is, is that, I don't mean to be rude, but I have played FF a lot. It's nothing new to me. I thought I made that clear. I know a lot about FF, even the ones I haven't played, except for the PS2 ones. Like, I know what the gameplay is like, but nothing of the stories of the PS2 games.
And, I was looking to see answers, that if you suggested a game I have played, that you would say that "You should go back to play FF___, because blah, blah, blah."

I guess I should play X, since I've heard very good things about it, and I've never played it.

I suggest Final Fantasy IV, even though I've actually never beaten it myself. The reason I suggested this, though, is my friend gave this a try. I know that sounds insignificant by itself, but it's quite significant due to the fact that my friend never plays video games, let alone RPGs. But the game entertained him enough for him to lock himself in his room for a month, just to beat the game. And he's never the isolated type. He wouldn't come kick it with us on the weekends!

I remember during that time all he would talk about was the game and how to beat certain bosses. He would ask me about other Final Fantasies and what games he should try next. I gotta say it was definitely just a phase, 'cause after he beat the game, he returned to his normal self.

So there you have it. If it can entertain a regular dude, it'll entertain you.

Though bias since it was my very first final fantasy experience, but FFX. It's quality gameplay, but that will vary with person. But an important aspect for someone looking to finish it is that it's got a really quality story with a very definitive endpoint that I think you will want to reach (its linearity helping in that sense). Just wanting to find out what was going to happen had me continue to play the game to the end.
