Your favourite game soundtrack?

Not a game per se, but I'm particularly impressed by the scale and detail that Square have put into their Final Fantasy series soundtracks. I have to say the whole series warrants my favor just because the melodies just seemed so perfect and most importantly the tracks conveyed what was happening not just in the game but what Square thought was what WE felt like. I thought that was pretty neat.

After giving some time and thought over the years, I think I have now come up with a concrete list of my favourites:

1. Chrono Trigger

One of the most consistent scores in terms of quality, and is just filled to the brim with charmingly evocative themes. My all-time favourite.

2. Shenmue

For the most part, the music can only be described using the movement of the sea. Flowing calmly and steadily at one time, then powerful and energetic the next. This soundtrack was unique for its seamless mix of Eastern and Western musical styles.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Arguably the pinnacle of Koji Kondo's works. Aside from his incredible melodies, it will also be remembered for its use of environmental sound effects to create a broad range of ambiences. From eeriness and claustrophobic to mysteriousness and exoticism.

4. Final Fantasy VI

Not only was it rich in memorable themes, it was also a showcase of Uematsu's technical capabilities. Mystery Train, The Wedding Waltz ~ Duel, The Magic House and Dancing Mad are just a few to name of his many subtle tracks.

5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

The popularity of this soundtrack comes as no surprise. It's simply a work of incomparable beauty and grace with hints of gothic music thrown in for good measure.

Game soundtracks that also deserves a regular spin in my disc player:

Shadow of the Colossus
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Dragon Quest VIII
Mega Man 2
Shadow Hearts
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Streets of Rage 2
Return of Double Dragon
Street Fighter II
Grandia
Deus Ex
Perfect Dark
Xenogears
Dragon Quest IV
Ys & Ys II Eternal
Super Castlevania IV

I'm going to have to go with the original Metal Gear Solid game as all time favorite. Enclosure is my favorite song of any game.
I love all the FF games and music, but if I were to pick out of a list of FF games, I guess I'd have to go with FFIX, simply because it was the music of that game that created the atmosphere. Without it I don't know if I'd have liked the game as much.
The song "Melodies of Life" had like 10 different versions in it...brilliant.

Kingdom Hearts - Cavern of Rememberance
FF12- Judge Theme
MGS1- Battle Theme
FF 4 and 5 - Battle Theme

are a few of them

Its a close call, but I'd say my favourite soundtrack is from Baten Kaitos: Neverending Wings and the Lost Ocean. The tracks are all either extremely calming and fit the incredibly beautiful locations (even by today's standards, in my opinion) the game had, or suitably dramatic. The majority of it is unremixed classical, and the battle themes are absolutely brilliant. The True Mirror remains my favourite default battle theme to this day.

Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria is one of my favourites as well, for similar reasons, although it is much more epic - I particularly like the use of vocals in tracks like Unrestrained Struggle and How Wicked Ruler: ominous, but not dominating the track, which is a nice change, since in a lot of soundtracks if vocals are used, then said vocals dominate the track, instead of supporting it.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope would come in at a close third. I love absolutely everything about this game (asides from Meracle, anyway) and I found the soundtrack incredibly enjoyable: tracks like Sunny Place are remixes from past Star Ocean games, and Ruin and Creation is the most epic intro movie theme I've ever heard, bar none. Before you've even pressed any buttons, you're treated to that~<3

As a series, Castlevania has some incredible tracks, as well. Vampire Killer gets remixed with practically every installment, and it always sounds awesome. Creepy organ music is definetely my sort of thing.

I'm also extremely fond of the sountrack for Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. Its one of my guilty pleasures - I absolutely love the game, and although the DS version having the songs sung in Japanese spoiled it for me somewhat, I downloaded the OST which, for some bizarre reason, has the songs in English, and I love them to pieces. After Disgaea, I just can't take anything NIS does seriously anymore, and with songs as cheesy as Let's Go On, its extremely difficult to...besides, the game is great fun to play. More games should be musicals!

I could go on and on and on and on and on...

For me it's really hard to say. It's a very close tie between Castlevania Symphony Of The Night and Castlevania Lament Of Innocence.

Castlevania Symphony Of The Night: First of all it's without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time. I rate it up around my #1 or #2 spot, up there with Super Castlevania IV & Rondo Of Blood from the PC Engine. The music is great, Michiru Yamane really out did herself with this game. The soundtrack ranges from different sorts of genres like a more rock sound like with Prologue and Dracula's Castle. To a more atmospheric sound like Crystal Teardrops and Dance Of Pales. It's just an all around great soundtrack that I can spend all day talking about but I won't do it much justice unless you've played the game or heard the soundtrack.

Castlevania Lament Of Innocence: Again probably one of my favorite games on PS2. It's for sure my favorite soundtrack on PS2, that I can say without hesitating. Once again Yamane does a superb job in producing the soundtrack to this game. It definitely has a more haunting atmospheric sound to it like Fog Enshrouded Nightscape, House Of Sacred Remains and Dark Palace Of Waterfalls. There's also such upbeat tracks as Anti-Soul Mysteries Lab. The soundtrack is all around dark, atmospheric, original and great.

Castlevania Rondo Of Blood: I'll add this for a bonus. This soundtrack was really good. Unfortunately the game was only released in Japan in 1993 on the PC Engine, so we in America didn't get experience the game nor the great soundtrack till many years later in Dracula X Chronicles for PSP. This was one of the first castlevania game soundtracks that Yamane had worked on. The soundtrack mixes in some classic signature themes like Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears in a more harder rock sort of sound, but it also has some great original themes like Opposing Bloodlines. Overall it's great and considered a classicvania.

Persona 3 & 4 are amazing. I love the rap and JPop thrown together, brilliant mix. Dragon Age Origins has a beautiful soundtrack, so mystical and magical.

And of course Final Fantasy 7, 8, X2 and 13. IMO the Final Fantasy OSTs rank highest for the game soundtracks. So much emotion involved and it gives you goosebumps.

I don't need to say Final Fantasy, since everyone else has already. Sooo~

This thread needs more Okami love. That game had such a gorgeous soundtrack, with a very traditional Japanese feel to it. Along with the sumi-e graphics, it goes really far to establishing the game's mood and setting. Most of my favorite tracks are the bright, happy ones (like Orca's Theme, Ryoshima Coast and Kamiki Festival), but the creepy dungeon music is great too. Always gives me the chills. My personal favorite track is the final boss battle music (Rising Sun). Epic. <3

Also really fond of Halo 3's soundtrack, particularly the tracks One Final Effort, Gravemind (Do not listen to this one if you're about to try and sleep. Seriously.) Halo Reborn, and Never Forget. I like listening to this stuff while I'm doodling and such. :3

Seeing all the responses in this thread, I feel sort of weird because I guess I don't really pay too close of attention to the soundtrack of the games I'm playing, unless they play a particularly significant role, like the Guitar Hero games or something.

That said, I think I'd say my favorite game soundtrack is probably Earthbound's. It has a unique style of music, and sometimes it's just fun to be in certain areas or engaged in battle just the enjoy the tunes. It's one of the few games where one of the songs will pop into my head suddenly for no apparent reason and I'll go "Man I should really play that game again."

Brutal Legend is up there, too. I enjoyed the music from the game so thoroughly that I've got a Brutal Legend playlist on my iPod with songs from the game. It got my feet wet in the metal genre and introduced me to songs and bands that I've come to really like listening to.

For me it's

Devil may cry 3- I love the rock battle themes a bit mixed with techno, it makes you pumped up for the fight. Also very emotional songs are in there and songs with choirs which I really love as well.

Devil may cry 4- same as above ^^

Uncharted 2- This one was better than the first game soundtrack. The title song was so awesome already as they improved it a bit and added some more instruments and it never bores you. I just can't explain how awesome most of the songs are. o.o

The Assassins Creed Series, if I ever felt like I was playing a Movie this game and its music fit the description perfectly, you notice the music and it enjoyable and fast pace sometimes, but its not annoying like most game Soundtracks can be.

1. Final Fantasy VIII, it was my first FF so it's kinda biased but I absolutely love the music!
2. Final Fantasy X/X-2
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Legend of Zelda series, very memorable soundtrack, especially in Ocarina of time!

Anything by Yasunori Mitsuda is always fantastic, e.g. Xenogears, The Chrono Soundtracks, Miki Higashino's Soundtracks for Suikoden I & II are just plain brilliant aswell but my alltime favorite OST is the Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura Soundtrack by Ben Houge, its simple, beautiful and suits the game so perfectly, unfortunately the songs are rather short...

You're Not Alone - FF9 - very epic stuff, especially with the story going on along side it. katethegreat did a good job making lyrics and singing for this.

Also, the Mario Sunshine song when you enter the secret levels. Very dark and nostalgic.

Being an "expert" >:3 pianist, I'd probably go with the piano heavy tracks of Crisis Core and X/X-2. But I do love the rustic/celtic/nostalgic tracks of IX and Crystal Chronicles.

Other games.... this may sound a bit n00bish, but Super Mario World had one of the most diverse.... yeah I'll go with that.... diverse tracks I've heard thus far. That or because it's probably the only other game soundtrack I remember >.>

Final Fantasy VI. There are very few tracks on the sound track that I will skip over.

Lunar SSS and Eternal Blue. To great games with beautiful music. And some tracks that are quite emotional too.

for me i'd have to say the persona 3 sound track all the songs in it are really great to me if i'd ever get the chance( or if it even exists) i'd buy the games sound track and listen to it for days on end my parents would probably get pissed after awhile XD
