Playstation Is Dragon Quest 8 worth getting?

My cousin loves the Dragon Quest series and showed me some of Dragon Quest 7.
I was thinking about renting it because it looked fun. But the only one there was Dragon Quest 8, and I haven't played any of the other games.
Do you have to play the games in order to understand the story or is it like Final Fantasy where you can play in any order?
Is the gameplay to easy of to hard?
What about the main character? Do they talk or are they mute? (Like Chrono or Link)

Actually, I would buy the game itself. It's quite an old game - plus it's a PS2 title, so it should sell very cheaply nowadays. Seeing as DQVIII is actually a huge game with ample hours of gameplay involved, it would be better to buy rather than rent. If you want to, I suppose you can still rent, but I would personally purchase it. :dave:

It's just like Final Fantasy. DQVIII has its own story just like a regular FF title. You don't need to have played any earlier DQ games beforehand. =]

It's very accessible. Dragon Quest is known for its standard turn-based battles and simple battle system. It doesn't have the complexity of the later Final Fantasy battle systems.

What about the main character? Do they talk or are they mute? (Like Chrono or Link)

The hero's mute. The other characters miss out his name when they speak. Which sounds a little odd. xD

I was really confused over the storyline thing. But I'm glad to hear I don't have to play 7 GAMES to understand it.

You have to buy DQ8. Think it took me about 74 hours to beat it and I didn't even do everything. Personally, I think I like Dragon Quest better than Final Fantasy. The graphics are cell shading, I believe, but the towns and music are actually quite beautiful and nice.

You can play them in any order, just like FF.

Gameplay is pretty easy and unlike FF games, it's actually a good idea to level up a little with each town you visit.

The main character doesn't talk, but everyone else does. The voices in this game are actually pretty well done. If I remember correctly, each town you come to, it's like the people of that town have different accents. They skip over saying the main hero's name like Fluer said, but Yangus calls him "The Gov." Which is cool.

overall, the whole game is amazing in my opinion. Right after I beat the game, my little cousin deleted my file. So I plan on replaying it at some point. So Def. buy it.

One of the best RPG's of the PS2 era, in my book, i out so many ours into this game, specially since there is so much to do, even to this day i don't think there has been an RPG this gen. that can even come close, to the charm of DQ8.

I love this game, it's pretty hard though D: As is grinding, it takes foreveerrrrrrrr. THe story is great though, the characters are as well and I absolutely love the cell shading for the graphics

And it has day and night as well

It's just ace, I started a new game recently, but I left my memeory card at a mates and need to get back into it

And no, its like FF you dont have to play them in order

The only thing I dont like is the 'Hero' doesn't talk, that has always irritated me - it's implied that he does, but there's no text for it D:

Very good game - definitely a throw-back.

Agree with most of what has been said here - very straight-forward plot, gameplay is easy and voice-overs and dialouge is well written and executed.

Personally, the thing I don't think it has is the re-play value of Final Fantasy, given the relative simplicity of the story and far fewer side-quests. I recently played through for the 3rd time, got towards the middle and said "Eh, I've had my fill".

You can certainly spend 70-100 hours if you level grind at the end and do the major side quest - I'd try to score a used copy on the cheap.
