Not Really, I Didnt Use Any Summons On Ruby Wep, I Used 1 Summon On Emerald, Which Was Pheonix When I Died, But I Set MY Materia Up So It Did Taht Automaticly..
 
yes its possible,, but in my experience i think i couldn't beat the weapon under the water w/o knights of the round.... or maybe its just bcoz i fought it w/ a low level char and intrust to much on the Knights,, well anyway i still beat it w/ summon.

we'll if your looking to a real challenge,, there's nothing to loose to try to complete the game w/o a summon:D
 
wouldnt be too hard if u just meen story line bosses etc. but if ur talking emerald/ ruby weapon its imposible unless u use lucky 7s
 
I only ever recall using summons against Jenova Birth and Jenova Death. No standard monsters nor challenging bosses required Summoning to ensure their defeat.

Summoning for the two Weapons though... not essentially, but advised if you don't want to be sitting around for a good hour+ or so.
 
I have never used summons, the negative effect on HP and Strength plus the time before you can use them lots in battle makes the effort more than the outcome
