Final Fantasy in decline?

You know something, I thought FFXII was going to be something spectacular, but it was seriously such a letdown. You can finish the game in under 20 hours. That shouldn't even be POSSIBLE! o_O

That's cause they spent less time on FFXII to make it great, but more time on making more FFVII spin-offs, films and other wanky products, am I right?

I'm sure, but...I wish it wouldn't have been so hyped up. ;)
It's a good game to play when you have absolutely nothing on the face of the earth to do. Hopefully square made their money, and FFXIII really blows us all away. ^_^

Please more fantasy and less sci-fi/future. ^_^

I haven't played this game yet so I can not comment. But I really hope what I'm hearing about character development is not true. I just can't get into a story if I can't empathize with the characters.

I had this problem with V because the only really interesting character was Faris. I also kind of had this problem with X but not so much.

If you took care and explored everything there was in FFXII, there wouldn't be such a problem.

FFXIII won't it's unlucky number 13 :P

i think that the battle systems have got worse. i dont like the battle system in ff12 cause u could really just walk away from the game and itll fight by itself. also the jobs are gone in the recent ones too...

 ok...where to start. I have to agree with several people on this thread that XII was initially a breath of fresh air. I am not much for MMORPG's so XI wasn't my cup of tea (I'm not knocking it, it just wasn't for me) X-2 seemed like a soft of Final Fantasy lite...the story was decent and the gameplay wasn't bad...but it seemed ultra "cute." I still had a good time playing it though :) X was f***ing great, I only played IX for a little bit (I NEED TO FINISH IT!!) VIII was outstanding, VII goes without saying ;) Anyways...the one thing that all of these games had in common was a gripping storyline. The story drew you in, the charecters were well thought out (most of them) and developed very nicely. XII was a poor excuse for a Final Fantasy game. Yes, the free roam battle system is very cool, but I think that is all there is to this game. The story was piss poor...it started out with SO much potential...Vayne, Marquis Ondore, the Rozarrian (sp?) empire etc. and then it just fizzled out. The game suddenly became all about the hunts. While most were fun...I realized after about 50 hours of gameplay that there wasn't much left to the game. It was suddenly very confusing as far as which empire was invading which, whose side the Marquis was on...what the hell happened to Vayne? He dropped off the face of Ivalice for about 40 hours (that's not very good if you want to develop the villian). Oh, and speaking of that..who was the villian? I guess it depended on what point in the game you were...and the nethecite...I could go on. I am not trying to upset anyone here, so please do attack me, I am just stating my displeasure for the game. While the story and charecter development SERIOUSLY lacked...I think that the "free-roam" is here to stay...and I'm cool with that. I don't know...it was just dissapointing to wait several years for another Final Fantasy, and then when it comes out, it felt like they made it look pretty and then threw together a story a the very last second. I'd give it a 4 / 10

I would have agreed with you if I was still playing in the first half of the game...but after leveling up and gaining more abilities, I found the gambit system to be very helpful...espcially during boss fights. In the beginning when you don't have much MP and all you're doing is using physical attacks, it does feel very automatic and boring...almost to the point of tears...but its not until you have many more magicks (etc) to manage that the gambit system comes into its own. And that stupid licence board was just a watered down version from FFX I thought.

Poor excuse for a Final Fantasy game? I could say more but no - I see more potential in this FF since FFVII. But that's just me. FFXII doesn't deserve 4/10.

Vayne was still a good villain even if you didn't see him a lot ;)

It wasn't as if he could go out there, rampaging and killing and stuff =P

LOL every company is allowed to make one Money Maker
Good point, but Square-Enix has too many 'money-maker' games IMO... I don't really have a soft spot for any of the games from X up, they all just seem weakly put together to me... If more people worked on the development of the FF games and Nobuo and Amano didn't leave, the games would be spectacular, no doubt about it! But, instead, Square-Enix is satisfied with making (as I call them) counterfeit FF games. FF XII was my favorite of Ten on up, but it still doesn't have a soft spot in my heart like I-IX...

i thought 12 was amazing. i thought the story was amazing. i thought the battle system was amazing. so many people argue about the story/character development, but i believe that the story was full and VERY well done. it was mature, had a lot of things going on, it dealt with difficult situations, etc. i thought it was great, some don't.
i admire you for what you just said. I love every single FF game. For those of you who didnt like XII, I guess you're aloud to have your own opinion

That's actually a really good editorial that deals with this topic; kudos Aztec. Everyone is so gung-ho on past FF glories that they set their standards so high that even a fraction of disapoointment could ruin the vibe of a game it seems.

It's all on personal preference I think. There'll be haters; there'll be lovers. Make love, not war.

thats a really really good editorial
i think BustaMo is right there will be haters and lovers
and i am a lover

FF12 was probably thought by people at last minute because the plot isn't really good..

That's why it took so long for them to actually release it? Just because you do not like it, doesn't mean it may have been thought up by people at the last minute.

I think FFXIII will be enough of a reason just to get a PS3

i think that's a pretty arrogant statement. i know i won't be buying a ps3 just for ONE game. there better be a bunch of killer apps for me to dish out that kind of cash.

why dont you admit it that the plot is bad
but the game is good
