I have both a mastered Cover and Counter Materia (looking at an old save) and equip them in joined slots, will that character then counter all the damage done to others that the character covers, or just damage to themself?

I think they are both purple materia and purple materia is independent. So the character won't counter because he covered and took damage. He should simply just counter attack because he was hit and has that materia on him. So there shouldn't be a reason to link them up. Blue materia is what you want to link to other materia.

the reason I am asking is, that i was wondering if I could use counter a lot more effectivly with cover on the same character, since that character would be attacked more often.

Counter is also yellow I think

Actually I think the counter and cover combo works well. There's just no reason to link them together. If you have counter linked with a specialty attack and a cover materia in a completely different spot, you're team will cover one another and retaliate when hit. I'm not sure if the person who covers will counter or the person who was covered will counter though...

It's the person who gts hit that counters. That said, a good combo of materia would be several mastered Counter Attack materia, and one mastered Cover. With this combo, every time one of your characters is going to get attacked, the character with 'Cover' takes the damage, and attacks the amount of times you have 'Counter Attack' equiped.

WOW that's a great idea, I will try that next time round, the only problem would be where to get so many Counters...

I think at one point I used the 4x cut materia joined with counter so it hit the enemy 4 times. I think it worked, but hey, it's worth experimenting right?

There are some things that don't work with counters. I think 4 Cut was one of them. I remember thinking that was a great idea but I couldn't get it work. There was another one like that as well. Maybe it's whatever deathblow turns into...

Easy, Master your Counter Materia's haha :D

Never ask where to get more of a said Materia, because thats the general response you'll get especially for the more rarier Materias.

hmmm not if your in a area where the monster give you lots of AP. in the grass area on the northern continent just south of the sleepy forest, there is a red dragon like monster that takes a while to beat but is pretty harmless that gives like, if i can remember correctly, 40ish ap i think. anyway its a fairly large amount considering the avarage you recieve in a standard battle on the world map

I heard in a guide once that somewhere near the tetra-elemental there's a a kind of worm that gives 500ap, dunno if its accurate. Or where to find it, any help on that would be appreciated

If your gonna do that, then your obviously on Disc 1. The best places to level up your characters & materia on this disc is at one of two places. The first place is in Junon. After you receive the buggy, take it right in to costa del sol, and take the boat to Junon. When in Junon, set off the alarm right next to the elevator to the underwater reactor. The enemies here range from 900exp & 90 AP, to 2100exp & 240 AP. This a great place to level up before you get the tiny bronco. When you receive the bronco, use a party consisting of 2x growth weapons & armor (like the rune bangle bought at the Bone Village) and take the bronco to the area of Middel. Once there, run to a grassy area, and fight the enemies there. The exp exp & AP here range from 800exp & 80 AP, to 2600exp and 320 AP. Their's a whole lot of leveling up to do here, and you should master basicly your fist summons, and all your current magic materia in more or less 2-3 hours.

Oh and Cooky560, your big worm is also here. But it isn't 500 AP it offers, it's 200 AP. It's the only creature you'll run into if you travel on the beach.
