I didn't see a thread about this show on the front page of this sub-forum, so I am making one. I'm just awesome like that. Anyway, I've been feeling pretty down lately because the show was put on a short hiatus... but is finally returning this Wednesday, and now I am excited. does anybody else watch this show, and if so, are you keeping up with the current season?
I must answer yes to both of those questions. I remember watching some of the first season, but didn't really get into it until season six was halfway through. I proceeded to buy all 5 seasons on DVD and watch them obsessively for several months. My conclusion is that season 8, thus far, is the best one since One and Two. Back in the day, Scrubs was about balance between two different worlds, and two main emotions sets within those worlds. There was "real life" and the actual going ons of the hospital, then there were the fantasies in J.D.'s dream world. Both were focused on "Funny" and "Drama", usually in that order.
This is the formula that led them to (don't trust me on these stats, I may be remembering incorrectly) their record high 16 million viewers a week, in season two. They plummeted down to under 11 million for season 3, and has been on a steady decrease ever since, ultimately ending up with less than 5.5 million.
Many fans blame this drop in popularity on the disruption of the aforementioned "formula" of a balance between comedy and drama. Seasons 3-7 grew to sillier and sillier proportions with virtually every episode, and the entire focus essentially became J.D.'s inability to concentrate. Which is funny... don't get me wrong, I love every episode of the show, but it never felt balanced anymore. It was either just zany and silly... OR it was utterly depressing in every way. sure, certain storylines were explored in other characters, but the first two years of show was more about an actual cast, that Zach Braff happened to be the leader of.
I really feel like Season Eight is a return to this format, where things are in balance again. There is a level of drama that is sustained through the episodes, yet the comedy is not sacrificed, except where need be. JD still dreams, but is isn't in the same intense frequency as the previous 5 years, and they mesh into the episodes much better.
I'm rambling now. If you used to watch the show and gave up, get on abc.com and watch this season so far. Otherwise, does anyone here watch it? Agree or disagree with me? Favorite moments, seasons, characters?
