Will Final Fantasy XIII go the way of VII or X-2?

Final Fantasy XIII is being developed by the Final Fantasy X staff. Masashi Hamauzu will score the game.

Really? That's pretty neat, and raises my expectations.

As far as the World Map - Hiking thing goes, I much preferred FF12's hiking system to the World Map thing, even if it was annoying at times (like the Sandseas). I always thought it was kind of childish to have little mini cities that your character was twice the size of, only to unfold into giant metropolises. It kind of reminds me of Pooh Bear, especially from Kingdom Hearts. :P

I hated the 100 Acre Wood missions in KH. Though I think it could be good that the FFX team are working on it I am also worried that it could be another game that is hyped up to the point it can't live up to expectation like last year with Assassins Creed, Halo 3 etc. Which is why X-2 was looked at like a failure of a game and why XII wasn't as good as what was expected. It was good but my no means great.

FFXIII is being directed by the FFX-2 director ...

I'm not that hopeful in the least.

Yeah, but similarly, it's being developed by the FFX director. I think FFX-2 was just rushed, and since obviously FF13 is taking some time, it should be at least decent.

And, in fairness, the good bits of FFX2, were really good. Like the Tidus/Yuna and Shuyin/Yuna scenes. With better material to work with, he should be a good director.

Yeah, definitely. The whole plot line with Shuyin and Vegagun were definitely well done, it's just outshined by the less developed elements of the game (the concept of missions, etc.). I actually liked FFX-2, but I don't think it is or should be the way FF13 is designed.

Though I hated X-2. I agree with Aerith that "the good bits of FFX2, were really good" but the problem was that because FFX was seen as a great game then naturally X-2 would have to be at least as good or better in which it was neither.
If X-2 was a spin-off then I don't think the hype would have been as high and therefore less pressure would have been put on the game.^_^

oops, yep that was all inferred for VII, jumped to the gun on that one. Misread it by just a small bit, and although more people died in IX, it didn't have as much impact as Aerith (aeries to some).

'Tis just a matter of opinion. I found
Kuja and Vivi's
deaths to have much more impact, since when Aeris died I just said "thank god", she annoyed the piss out of me.

X-2 wasn't rushed, the only reason it didn't take long to make was because it was in the same world...they had alot of stuff they could reuse and they were familiar with everything, they weren't making everything from scratch. That being said, it was still a piece of crap, J-pop, Charlie's Angels-wannabe (also opinion, although largely shared).

But since XIII shows no signs of J-pop failure, and since they'll have to spend more time on it...maybe it'll be done with more care.

I also agree with VengefulRonin about Famitsu were 'idiotic enough to give XII a perfect score' there were a number of flaws with the game, I disliked the battle system, the charcter depth was abominable and the storyline was weak (its not the worst) but it was far from being the best.

I have to agree too. I think part of it because it's a Final Fantasy main title. Critics expect some wonderful masterpiece. Also it's SOMEONE'S OPINION.

FFXII is a love or hate it game. For some people, they thought it was one of the best FF games. For other people I've talked to, they thought the was disappointing. With FFXII, it seems more fans disliked it compared to the other Final Fantasy games. I mean that there are many fans who love FF VI, VII, VIII, etc but there are fans who thought it was meh or didn't like it. XII, besides X-2, seems to have a large number of Final Fantasy fans who dislike XII.

Final Fantasy XIII is being developed by the Final Fantasy X staff. Masashi Hamauzu will score the game. According to what I have heard from you, Final Fantasy XIII might get a mixed reception. I am sure Final Fantasy XIII will become worthy of a seat in the Square Enix hall of fame (like Final Fantasy VI and VII), and not in the Square Enix hall of shame (like Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest) .

Umm... Masashi Hamauzu is only a composer. He composed newer Final Fantasy games. Nobuo Uematsu is a MUCH better composer and he's more experienced. FFX music was okay but it wasn't as good other music in the past FF games. Reason for that because Nobuo did the music score/composed for the older games. Also Nobuo composed Chrono Trigger as well, which is an amazing soundtrack.

I doubt FFXIII will be OMGZ GROUNDBREAKING! I hope it's a better game than XII or just as good as X. I just hope FFXIII will be worth buying a PS3.

I love AND hate XII. When I played it, one minute I'd be thoroughly enjoying it, a minute or two later I'd be cussing at it...no exaggeration either.

XII was really hit and miss...there were alot of great things in the game, but they just messed up on so many things. Half the time it felt like I was playing a beta simply because some things were so inane it was like "okay...did they even play this game? they would have seen this sucks ass."

And Nobuo is smart, he seems to have given up on SE for the most part in favor of Mistwalker. But um, it was actually Yasunori Mitsuda who composed the CT soundtrack...but it definitely wins so much more than the X-2 or XII soundtracks.

I don't think it will be worth a PS3. Just SE working on multiple games at the same time is warning enough. Previous FF games were of higher quality since they were largely worked on by themselves and weren't rushed. Multiple projects at the same time = quality suffers. Not to mention releasing multiple games under the number XIII is just a way to milk more money from fans.

X-2 had good reason to be received negatively. It ruined X's perfect ending, it was so over the top with crappy pop that it was sickening, the sudoku tournament that replaced blitzball was terrible, and it just plain sucked.

Either you think Blitzball in X-2 was so horrible you can't even mention it, or you just never got that far.

X-2 was particularly horrible because of it's smaller features; forget butchering the story of FFX. They completely defaced Blitzball and made it into something that should've never been created. You can't even control your characters, and all you really do is watch the game.

I never made it that far before I sold the game :wacky:

I dunno, I still the sudoku minigame is the cruelest thing ever. I'M NOT ASIAN I'M BAD WITH NUMBERS DAMMIT.

Ya know...speaking of minigames...I wonder if XIII will have them? Since VII, FFs have usually had either alot of small mini-games or one large mini-game...but XII seemed to start to steer away from this (the fishing game being the largest minigame, and it wasn't much of one), so I wonder if XIII will have them. Of course, there's always Agito (pic done by me, redistribute for lulz):

FFXIII is being directed by the FFX-2 director ...
Final Fantasy XIII is being directed by Motomu Toriyama, the director of Final Fantasy X and X-2. It is being produced by Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy X. The scenario writer of Final Fantasy XIII is Kazushige Nojima, the scenario writer of Final Fantasy X, not Daisuki Watanabe, the scenario writer of Final Fantasy X-2. Final Fantasy XIII will be scored by Masashi Hamauzu, who partly scored Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy X-2 was scored by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi.

I believe it will go the way of FFIX, a less emo version of FFVII with a more adventurous tone in the beginning, but eventually going from mission to mission.

But yes, i AM praying it becomes nothing like XII, with it lifeless robots called characters.

Well, I'd judge it in terms of story depth, gameplay(especially battle system), music, and characters.
It seems that there are limitations as to the basic themes in games. There always has to be some sort of major antagonist/evil empire in fantasy games, but these antagonist forces appear in different forms. E.g Sin, Kefka, The Empire. That said, it'd be good if there was a bit less politics and more focus on telling a good story this time round. The game also has to have a certain style... e.g FFXII was more grandiose, and X sorrowful. Could XIII and its spinoffs be really dark?
As for characters, well, it does depend on the personality more than how they look. Just don't want clones from past games.
The main antagonist, well... what is it going to be, Cocoon's government? Or something on Pulse...
I also DO NOT WANT another game with no true classes. There should be a return of classes, not some overly free character development and license board. That was why character development in XII was so weak. Most of the player characters appeared too class neutral, IMO.
I just hope SE makes a quality FF which all fits together. Numbered FFs are supposed to be different from each other. I.e, XIII's battle system and style should not be similar to XII's...

Yes! There has to be Class-based characters. I almost cried at the lack of a decent system in 12 :(

I'm hopeful the characters will be designed a bit better too, having decent histories, as well as less depressed characters. I mean, one's okay (FF8 for anyone?) but like...2 cheery-ish (Penello and Balthier in here) people on the team, a diplomatic princess who struggles to smile, and a guy who's only aim in life is to fly an airship in a world full of them, didn't seem like a huge bunch of imaginative people in that group.

FF13 looks good at first glance, but I'm not sure if that's just showing off the characters and graphics. I mean, gunblades (huzaa!) are either gonna rock, or suck. There's no inbetween now that they've done it once. That is a major flaw in my opinion, as it could make it their best or just short based on one weapon they decided needed a revival.

I'm hoping their mass-political movement from FF12 is scrapped for a more party related style. Versus suggests a prince, but I'm hoping he leaves his namesake behind, much like characters in other games have, and that that was just some sort of flashback or something. Would be pretty cool...

As for the other one, I'm seeing a rebel remeniscent of the days of FF7. Should have a lot of background to that character, hopefully. Knowing them, it won't have quite as many twists as Clouds did (Did that happen or not? I'll never know...), but hopefully enough to keep me on the edge of my seat.

From the clips, I could easily see it going either way. Only time will tell...and more clips of course!
