Multiple Platforms Capcom Announces StreetFighter IV

Ive been a fan of the Street Fighters since Street Fighter 1 which I had on the spectrum or was it the Amstrad? and of course the great Street Fighter 2 which rocked the world and started the genre of fighting games. To bad that clip doesnt show any gameplay, Im really excited.

Cash cow? It's been 8 years since Third Strike came out.

Anyhoo it's great to hear a new one is coming out although this news is about 2 weeks old now, hope my other main character Yang is back for this and I hope to God that the balance is better than TS with Chun-Li and Yun being the main culprits.

Please, please, please!

....don't be like Capcom Fighting Jam...

That's all I ask, so long as it's a better than competent fighting game which makes up for about a decade of inactivity I'll be happy enough. Some good new characters wouldn't go amiss, although I wouldn't mind seeing a few of the SF3 cast returning, I actually liked most of them. Dudley trims rose bushes with boxing gloves on, now that's skill! Perhaps a return to Alpha3/CVS groove systems? Who knows, but I await knews of this far more eagerly than news of Basara X, which seems to be a bit on the disappointing side.

Haohmaru - Crouching Lp, Hp, Hp, Hp, Hp, Hp........
Vega/M.Bison - Crouching Hk, Psycho Banish, Psycho banish, Psycho Banish....

Did someone say cheap? I remember some of Yun and Yang's combos in 3 being pretty snide as well, mostly being one hit pokes followed by a stream of repeated specials. I'm more interested to see if they've done something along the lines of parrying once more, learning to combat the Super Arts was one of the most rewarding parts of Street Fighter 3, I hope there's a similair system implemented somewhere in the new game.

Yang is a near enough a top tier character but is not cheap unlike Yun and Chun-Li, Yang's SAIII takes a huge amount of effort and with little damage unlesss it's on a character that has weak vitality like Akuma/Ibuki. All it's good for is just being a pain in the ass and for keeping the other player in the corner, I prefer using SAII and Ex Mantis Slashes anyway. Yun on the other hand is complete fucker in the right hands, it takes skill to use but it's not entertaining to see even if it's a top Japanese player like KO.

Parrying I'd imagine will be back, that was fun to do.

Now that Dhalshim is coming back there is no excuse for not bringing back Guile, Remy was shit. I'll need a think at the full list of returnees I want.

Also to completely hijack the thread some screens of the SFII HD remake for the XBLA and PSN.

It is true my good man. Feast your eyes on these. So you know as well that the game takes place between SFII and SFIII so pretty much guaranteed that SFIII characters won't be appearing, it also means that this won't be based on the World Warrior tournament so will be a sort of filler like Alpha/Zero. However I do hope this means that Sagat at least will make an appearance to finish off his rivalry with Ryu.

Edit: Also some footage for the SFII HD Remix. Not perfect quality but look pretty damn nice, would be great if it had a non laggy online mode too.

I must say I'm worried by some of the stuff that I'm hearing about the game. I'm talking mostly about this months' Edge interview with the director ( the name escapes me at the moment ), particularly his comments that they are essentially listening to the fans and trying to emulate Street Fighter 2. It just strikes me that whilst blindly ignoring your fans is a rather dangerous thing to do, it's important that any team has the strength in it's idea to carry on regardless of outside pressure. I hope that he is talking about a limited amount of fan-input 'cos if he ain't then there could be trouble.

And I'll be honest, as good as Street Fighter II was for it's time - it's been surpassed. Greatly. The Alpha and III series both imporved on the original formula in their own way, I don't honestly know why you'd want to go back to Street Fighter II's way. Maybe they're just fondly remembering when they dominated a lively arcade scene.....which has been dead for years.

Forgot to post up earlier, I've got scans of the magazine that give you a fair bit of info on the game if you're interested.

The biggest worries that I have for the game are firstly that it's in a way a homage to SFII, this is apparent in the characters confirmed and that it's based between II + III but I've always felt that that was a silly decision and a step back from III where the largely new roster was refreshing. And back in the day they were cool but beyond the shoto trio, Chun-li, Cammy, Vega and Sagat there aren't any others I'd want to return.

Secondly the new battle system they've used just sounds horrible, taking away the parry system which rocked with this new Save system which just looks at first glance a way of getting a cheap combo in. In the recent vid that was released Ono mentioned that he wanted to imitate the Parry System, in my view he should copy it.

And lastly the footage that was shown last week just confirmed every fear I had about the game, the main reason I hate 2.5/3D fighters is that floaty feeling that comes with them. The speed just doesn't seem there which is a big thing for me in fighters. The below video (which is edited so you see the gameplay not the full interview) shows what I mean, it just doesn't look like a Street Fighter game.

All in all I'm put off more and more about the game and really come to the point that I don't really give a crap, I've got SFIII, CvS2, MvC2 and numerous other fighters that appeal to me but this just to me seems to be made to appeal to the SFII crowd as well as bring in a new audience with the 3D visuals.

Thanks for the info and link man. Although I agree with what you're saying, I still want to try this game out, thank god though that they didn't make it like Tekken, now that would have been disappointing.

For further reading here's the scans of the EGM story on SFIV. This is from ages ago but posting here anyway. Has details of the Saving/Revenge System and the truth about Poison's genitalia.

Honestly... I think that Capcom has innovation issues... They're too afraid of doing things their own way, and thus, listen to the fans who liked Street Fighter 2 too much. And they seem to be making such a big deal about his '2.5D' thing... It's not innovative in the least... Almost every fighting game has been '2.5D'-ified. Honestly, I like both 2D and 3D fighters, but what I've got to say to Capcom is; why not try to do something... Y'know... ACTUALLY NEW!?

Well Capcom have brought out within the last few years new IPs in Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, Okami and Zack & Wiki which sold probably 10 copies apiece. When idiots prefer to buy bland games like Halo and not new games like these then it's sorta hard to risk doing something new. There are far worse culprits out there like Nintendo.

However if you're talking about this in terms of the fighter genre then there isn't much really that can be done to make it innovative. I would agree that making this into a cumfest for the SFII crowd is a step backward though. The 2.5D thing I still think was done more to appeal to a new crowd than to be innovative in any way, it's still a 2D game at the heart of it.

It's been confirmed that an arcade version of the game is being made, it's probably going to be Japan only though.

Meet Crimson Viper, she's a new character for the SF series and says to me that Capcom are taking ideas from SNK now. I'm not impressed.

EDIT:
Finally again here's scans of a recent article from Famitsu showing that the original 8 are all present and accounted for. Looks like they've touched up on the graphics but it's the actual speed and animation I'm most worried about. From what I can find out the game is slated to be released in arcades in the Summer of this year.

Dhalsim + E. Honda

Well, I s'ppose I can be glad that the one SF2 character I really wanted to return ( Zangief ) has done so, but meh, between this and Soul Calibur 4 I've been pretty disappointed by recent fighting game announcements. Some new more characters or at least some unexpected inclusions would be more welcome, like Rainbow Mika! So long as there's at least a couple of grapplers for me to mess around with.

Here's a new character for you to have a look at, Abel. Looks pretty crappy.

Also here's some vids of actual gameplay footage from AOU 2008, looks pretty 'floaty' when in motion. C. Viper looks pretty cool although her moves reminds me of several SNK characters. Also the links may be wrong for some of them or may start up since Game Videos seems to be acting up.

I wasn't too sure of Abel at first ( looks a little bit bland to be honest ) but seeing his moves in action have me interested. A comboing grappler, just what the game needed! Although I don't think he'll quite reach the plateaux that Daimon has set for that type of character.

The only vid I've seen of Crimson Viper didn't really tell me much though, I'll have to look for more of her. The guy found one move ( the fire kick in the air ) and spammed it a bit, with a few pokes thrown in. Not exactly enough to judge a character on.

Hrmm...Seems capcom is trying to do the thing that everyone has wanted them to do for the longest.

I remember Street Fighter EX3. It was a 3D installment. It was actually a O.K. game. Not that great, but decent.

Something about bringing it from 2D to 3D takes away the 2D magic that we once felt in the game before. So, let's see if they can keep us interested with the 3D version.

The characters look so...bulky though. Eh...

For you hardcore streetfighter players (like me) this is great news! I didn't think another game would be made but I guess this cash-cow can roam the plains again!

check out the info here:

I just saw the trailer, and that's very impressive. The last time I played Street Fighter was in the Sega console - talk about classic, huh? That trailer has piqued my interest once again. I am now checking at ebay and see if I can find any Street Fighter games. I saw that there's EX3, Alpha Anthology, and Fighting Evolution.

Any recommendations? I am also thinking of buying Street Fighter IV, of course, but for the meantime, I need a game to occupy me since I heard that the release is more than a year away...? Or am I wrong?
