I've only just joined and I dunno what to post about, so I'll just post about Doctor Cid for the hell of it.

I think he is one of the best characters in the game,
when Balthier was talking about him in the Phon Coast being a close friend, and the fact he used to be a judge, it just made me think that Doctor Cid was his father for some reason.. then when I finally see him in Draklor, they look sooo alike. And just now I've found out he is his father.

Did anyone else know that Cid was Balthier's father as soon as you saw him? They've even got the same haircut sort of.

Yeah i noticed that, i thought it was obvious right from the start, when Balthier mentioned him at the phon coast it was just crystal clear. ^_^

Hmm, I thought I was like the only one who considered
Balthier and Cid to be father and son. FF has some screwed up storylines though, Cid trying to kill his own son and vice versa.
 
Dr. Cid was an interesting character in this game. I liked the character for the most part but I hate his motivations. Unlike villains from other games, I didn't hate him for his motivations... I just hated his motivations. I thought they were lame, pointless, and impossible to relate with. As for the battles and way in which he held himself, they were always very interesting.
 
Ye same,
the only reason he wants Ashe to use the nethicite is too 'see what happens when two great forces clash or something'
. Pretty pointless. But I still think he's a great character, and
that gattling gun attack he uses when you fight him in the Pharos
is hilarious. Sadly I'm stuck on
Famfrit
so I dunno what happens next. :mad:

No more or less so than Sephiroth, Ultimecia or Kuja, I think. One wanted to become God. One wanted to compress past, present and future together to make a world where only she can exist. Another wanted to merge two worlds together. I don't think anyone can relate to any of these motivations xD

For XII, though, I do think it's at the other end of the extreme. It wasn't always clear, but every 'villain' in that game, right back to Venat, only wanted the best for the world. That's not to say their techniques and whatnot were totally unquestionable; quite the opposite. I'd say, though, that the motivations in XII were easier to relate to than the other games.

were somehow close, and I was edging toward a father/son possibility
, but I didn't want to expect something that was totally wrong so I didn't dwell on it.

Actually, I thought this twist was one of the paradoxical downfalls of the plot - it could've been such an awesome backstory, but you don't hear anything about it. That pretty much sums up the one thing I really dislike about FFXII - it suggests something deep but never really pulls through with it to a deeper level.

For example, the scene at
the Ridorana Cataract, at the top of the lighthouse,
the interaction between
Cid and his father
seems to be two-dimensional - their feelings on what could have been vs. their feelings on what happened. There are hardly any layers hinted at and anything really deep seems to be based solely upon fanwank.

I would've liked to have heard some in-depth anecdotes or seen some snippets of the times that the two were on good terms, but we don't get any interesting or deep content
- except that picture in the end credits
. But that could have easily been missed.

Balthier went on about them being close at the Phon Coast, I expected more of an interaction between the two at Draklor or at Pharos. But all that happens is a bit of chat and then a fight. They seem to have no feelings left for each other. I kept thinking they were father and son, but so far in the story I haven't had any proof, it was only when I wikipedia'd Doctor Cid that I found out.
And Wikipedia knows all.
 
All the main villains in the Final Fantasy series have wanted power to some extent. He was more of an assistant villain, like Seifer or Seymour. They all have different main goals but Cid's was just to gather and experiment with more powerful magics for scientific purposes. He wanted to live forever but for no other reason than experimenting with science. It just seemed so withdrawn from normal reasons. Power was a side-effect but he just wanted to experiment.
 
I also don't think Cid's motivations were as bad as some people are saying. Yes, it might seem weak that he's threatening massive destruction just for scientific knowledge, but don't we have another awesome villain who did the same?

A certain Dr. Hojo?

I think what made Hojo a stronger character for some fans is that his insanity was stressed a little bit more, whereas they just made Cid seem eccentric rather than insane
(until Pharos, of course).
 
Haha the two of them have the same Britishy accent and look soso similar.. I don't know but I just didn't like Doctor Cid, even his lab creeped me out. But then again I just don't like Final Fantasy XII very much.. but I won't get into that, there's a thread for that lol :P
 
Honestly, I didn't pay attention to the scene at Phon Coast... I was on the phone at the time. :shame: However as soon as I saw Cid in Draklor, it became pretty obvious who this 'Cid' really was. The name was also a huge give-away. :rolleyes:


I quite enjoyed the character in this game. He did have elements of insanity which made his ordeals understandable, and his maniacal laugh... phew. The portrayed relationship between he and Balthier was quite touching at times. I couldn't help but notice that no matter how much Balthier cursed the man, he was distraught at what he had become. Cid seemed more disappointed in Balthier than angry, so I like to think there was something deeper there than what meets the eye.
 
No, I never actually compared the two of them facially as being father and son. However, I did realize (obviously) that he was Dr. Cid’s son after viewing the cut scene between Ashe and Balthier on the Phon Coast.

I agree though, both were great characters, especially the design of Dr. Cid (without going into spoilers).

when Ashe pointed it out. I never really payed much attention to the cutscenes. Odd though, since
Cid is Balthier's father, you would expect Balthier to have a huge nose too
, but it's good he doesn't cuz he woulda looked terrible that way.

As for Cid himself, i haven't fought him in the Pharos yet, but he seems pretty cool, he's alot more interesting than Vayne, that's for sure. And i think his motivations (along with Venat's) are pretty good actually. Sometimes makes me wonder if my team is on the right side.

I couldn't agree more... As far as villains went, Dr. Cid's character was far more interesting than Vayne's. To me, it just seemed Vayne was briefly in the beginning of the story... forgotten about... then reintroduced at the end.
 
Dr. Cid = best boss fights EVER. In FF history. EVER. He's just too awesome guys.
 
Lord no. He was a mediocre boss at best. Can't say I'd expect much from a scientist. His character -however- is brimming with excellence.

Pity he's pushed to one side for a majority of the game. :(
 
doctor cid is your typical mad scientist, and i think its the first time they used a character like that in the FF series so he was very interesting. i thought his boss fights were hard, and his backstory and the plot twist involving him and "the leading man" was the best part of the story IMO.
