Help "Why won't they mate properly?"

Okay guys I need some help here. I have recently started another run through of Final Fantasy. I have just started the third disc, but I really need the Knights of the Round in order to defeat the last few bosses. To do this I need a gold chocobo so I decided to start breeding. I have a wonderful male yellow chocobo and a wonderful female yellow chocobo. I have been trying for the last few days to make them mate and give me a Green or Blue chocobo but with no success. I have used both carob and zeio nuts.

Any suggestions??

To get the green and blue chocobos you need to mate a great and a good chocobo witht the carob nut. You will also need to feed them up - best way of doing that is by giving them sylkis greens that you can buy off the chocobo sage and racing them til they are S class ..or as high as you can get at least. It improves the odds.

Just save the game before you breed them just incase you dont get what you want

And this is a very big IN CASE, too. I had every criteria filled before I attempted breeding, and it still took about two straight hours of breeding, then restarting, before I finally got a gold chocobo.

It's very frustrating, so you might wanna have a movie going or something else to keep you occupied while you breed them.

simple guide

great & good + Carob nut = blue & green
Blue & green + Carob nut = black
Black & wonderful + Zeio nut = gold

Feed them and race them well.

right this formula is tried & tested!

Catch a good chocobo & race to A (male)

Catch a great Chocobo & rave to B (female)

mate with carob nut to obtain Blue or green chocobo

(discard of yellows!)

Catch a great chocobo & race to A (female)

Catch a good chocobo & race to B (male)

mate with carob nut to obtain opposit of what was bred last time!

(discard of 2nd yellows!)

(make sure you have 1 male blue & 1 female green or opposit dont matter!)

Race blue or green male to S

Race blue or green female to S

Mate with carob nut to obtain black chocobo!

Black can be male or female!

catch a wonderfull chocobo male or female & race to S

Black chocobo of the opposote sex shoould also be raced to S


Mate with a zeio nut to obtain Gold chocobo!


carob nuts are found by stealing from red dragon thing outside bone village


zeio nuts are obtained on goblin island (top right?) steal from goblin!)


there you go... looks easy but is tricky as you need to feed greens etc. to boost stats!

with gold chocobo fully souped up you can race is S class & beat Teioh 20 times to obtain uber rare items!

Sheesh. As much as I love FF7, and as many times as I've played it, I've not once bred any chocobo, nor have I raced any other than the time you actually HAVE to in the storyline.

Goes to show how great the game is. One could love playing it for years and still not do everything there is to do in the game.

It was fairly easy to breed chocobo.I never had any problem with it.You just had to make the effort.

There are plenty of faqs around as well to tell you how to do it.

One of the best things ever done in an FF game.I wonder why Square has never duplicated it in any of the recent FF games.
