Ok after searching through all 6 pages i didnt find this thread so someone had to make it :P

in XII who do you think the main character was?

theres no way i could ever think it was Vaan and Penelo - they were just...There.

so that leaves the other 4.

Although important Fran isnt the main character - shes important because of her knowledge of the world and the mist.
Basch - very important due to his connections to Ashe and Gabranth
Balthier - although he calls himself the leading man...i agree with Fran - hes more of a supporting character - a very important one though XD

so that leaves me to the conclusion that Ashe is the main character - the game follows what Ashe wants to do, and Ashes goals, and basically tells Ashes story.

but what do you think? :P
 
I voted for Ashe, the reason being that I see Final Fantasy XII as a similar scope of Final Fantasy X - I'd always seen Yuna as the main character, but the story was through Tidus' eyes. As for this game, I see it as pretty much the same - you play through as Vaan, but Ashe is the main character.

One implication of this is the running gimmick when Ashe is talking and then Vaan interrupts her - she says "Don't interrupt me, Vaan" several times in the game. This indicates to me that, while Vaan is a central character, he is not the main focus of Final Fantasy XII; it is, in fact, Ashe.
 
As well as Riku I chose Ashe. She seemed to be the main focus of the story, the others were just there, helping her. Basch was kind of her guard or protector, whatever you want to call it because of Vossler's behavior he took his role. Vaan chose to help her because he lost someone to the Archadian Empire so it seemed he just wanted to help her to see the the Archadian Empire fall. Balthier decided to tag along, following Vaan because of the treasure he had stolen before Balthier and Fran. Fran was a pair with Balthier, sort of a couple, though they just work together. So everyone revolves around Ashe. Vaan was just the character we played as because his story was the first we saw, it would be sort of weird to have Vaan as the main character, the one who was walking around the towns, and then all of a sudden when we get Ashe she takes his place.

I voted Ashe FTW!

Agreed, she was the main character given that much of the story and political strife centered around her and her stolen kingdom. Not to mention for a time being in the game, Ashe becomes a one of the main
pawns of the Occuria
.

Ashe is obviously the main character of the game, there is no doubt about that, it's pretty clear.

Riku, you're wrong... Yuna's not the main character of the game in ffX, but I guess I'll post in the right thread sometime to refute that sentence of yours.
 
Ashe. The whole story revolves around her.
 
As much as I'd like to think Vaan is the main character, is is in fact just....there. The idea of controlling a guy who barely qualifies as a sidekick bothers me.

They all possess their own individual key roles which has an evident impact on the entire story, but most of what they did throughout the course of the game was for Ashe, and her 'destiny.'
 
I say ashe because the storyline s based around her
Although balthier and basch also play a big part too
 
I think Vaan is the main Character but then I go to Lady Ashe then go right to Balthier so my gess is that there are 3 main Character in the game
 
I wouldn't think Ashe because if you think about it the women usually take the spotlight. Aeris and Rinoa did but maybe not as much but with Garnet and Yuna being the centre of attention, Ashe could easily follow in this pattern with the supposedly Vaan as the main character or even Balthier and Basch. I think what ruins it for Balthier is his ego that he calls himself the leading man. I think that Basch is perfect for it but the only thing that would prevent him from being the main character is the fact that he isn't a teenager!
