I just started playing this but I'm really clueless about alot of things so if anyone could help me out that would be really nice :D and I wouldn't mind playing with other people too. I just started so I could make a new character if you guys are on a different server or something. I don't want to play this game alone :(

I play on Mysidia and have since release if you are curious, Holy Dragoon

Early game has changed, but you're probably going to want to get your feet wet with Guildleves, as well as the early story missions, they will help you get to know your immediate area.
The Adventurers guild is your friend. Guildleves will be what you use to get started, and can actually be useful all the way up to and including R50. Guildleves are basically repeatable quests, they are a major source of income.
You can do 16 Guildleves per 36 hours. 8 Battle / Gathering / Faction, and 8 Crafting.
Guardians Aspect, allows for higher guildleve SP rewards upon completion.
Guildleve rewards are based on time to complete. The faster you can go, the better. Eventually Parties help with this.

Getting gear will be your biggest challenge right now. The markets are not selling a lot of gear due to the R25 Notorious Monters, 25 Dungeon, 45 Dungeon and the high rank NMs. That will change post 1.19 though with the big craft system change incoming and addition of the Materia system. Don't worry too much if your gear does not quite match your rank. It does become more important later on though, your gear stats are significantly slashed by wearing improper gear, it just happens currently it affects low ranks less.

My advice search your starter town for quests, they offer gil/gear rewards. Try your best to do your Guildleves for the rewards too, they also offer Guild Marks and Faction Points. You can't always use the gear, but you can sell it to an NPC, and some sells for better price than the public market.

As for your stat allotment when you rank up physically:

  • STR - Attack
  • VIT - Defense and Hit points
  • DEX - Critical Hit Rate, and slight adjustment to accuracy
  • INT - Magic Damage
  • MND - Magic defense and MP pool
  • PIE - Magic Crit Rate and Magic Accuracy (more noticeable than DEX is on accuracy)

If you started as a Disciple of the Hand or Land:
Guildleves, I can not stress this enough for non battle classes. Craft Guildleves do not use materials, all that is invested is your time to make the items and travel to the camp to turn them in. Item rewards are used in recipes usually. Recipes are obtained through doing Local Guildleves.

The main hall where you begin will be a hub for you early on, the Adventurers Guild is there with the guildleve counter, as is the Retainer NPC (retainers are storage npcs you hire for free, you can have 2, and can set them to sell your goods), and summoning bell to call up your retainer to store inventory.

You can sell goods at any NPC with a shop set up, the sale rates do not shift per item.

Guild Marks
Once you hit Rank 10 you begin to obtain these, they are used as you rank up to buy skills, or stat conversions which are helpful when playing multiple classes.

Faction Points
Special guildleves at the guildleve counter cost Faction points to obtain. You can choose to do the lower ranked ones for some good gear, or save them up for when you get to rank 50 for gear that can be obtained in no other way by taking on the Faction Guildleve NMs. Faction Guildleves are tougher than your standard guidleves, unless they are in the form of a running quest. You obtain Faction points during standard guildleves, based on performance. There are 3 types of Faction to obtain.

Linking Guildleves.
Should you find a group you can Link guildleves. If multiple members in the party have the same Guildleve you can Link them at an aetherite camp. You get a small bonus per member that links in with you, which means you get higher rewards. You'll also be able to complete them faster, adding to your completion time performance bonus. This grants you more SP, Gil and Faction points.

The Market
I touched on this earlier, but when you hire a retainer to store goods, you can also visit the market. The name of each market changes depending on the city. There are also different markets that apply to differnt item types. Summon your Retainer in the market of your choice, then make sure you choose items to add to your Retainer's Bazaar. The item must already be on the retainer in order to be added to the Bazaar. Set your price and then be on your way. Don't dismiss your Retainer, or it will leave the market. It will also leave the market if you summon it from another location such as another city, or a summoning bell. Once items are on the market they will show up in the Market Search. Market Search is accessible my walking up to a market, and window will pop up. Items are sorted by type. Keep this in mind when selling its as well. If you sell a sword in the Tailor's Ward you will be taxed higher. Sometimes markets will get full. This is kind of a bug currently, it will be changes to Retainers can expire from markets if they are not tended to after a certain time period.

There's a lot here, but I hope it helps. I can clarify anything you like.

I've also started Final Fantasy XIV myself thanks to my dear nephew of mine. I'm starting out as a Lancer in the Lindblum server. The best way like Holy Dragoon said get use to the game and the controls first.

Also, another thing as stated is find guides online that will help you guide your way depending on what class you wanted to be. The forums or the Lodestone, also Yellow Gremlin, and Gamer Escape probably one of the best online stuff / help for XIV.

My character's Leon Trevion and I'm a Lancer (forgotten what Rank I am and Lancer hehe), but I will be working on it today. :)

I hope all that helps for you.

Does anyone know for sure (with a source) if FFXIV will be pay-monthly on PS3? I absolutely refuse to continue to pay for a game that I've already bought, Final Fantasy or no.

The game isn't currently up to the developers standards, so they won't be charging monthly until december. But, I doubt you will be able to play it without providing credit card information. And this is a MMORPG, you have no choice but to pay monthly because the game is constantly growing and changing.
