We know that Aeris and Zack were boyfriend and girlfriend, but it was never specified in the game that they broke up. So, that would mean that they were still together until Zack died which happened right before the game started. Also, Aeris was never told that Zack had been killed. You also see Zack and Aeris together in the movie. Aeris knew Cloud for only a short time before she died.

Well, what do you think?

This has been stated numerous times. We've had numerous discussions on this and Aerith's official novel Maiden Who Travels the Planet confirms that she loved Cloud more than she ever loved Zack. Here's a direct quote taken straight from the novel

Even so, she was sad. Her heart was in pain.

All the companions that she had journeyed with, the people she grew close to for the first time, the mother that raised her and looked after her for fifteen years Elmyra, the people that she didn’t know too well, the people who she might have met in the future, people she hadn't met yet... It was a fact that she could no longer be with the "living".
Aerith also knew that the sadness was also with those who she left behind. They didn't know that she still existed as her soul. They didn't need to know. Even if she wished they did, the sadness wouldn't be healed if they knew the truth. The thought of everyone's sorrow made the pain in her even worst.

Aerith was in even greater pain when she thought about Cloud.
She also had good feelings towards him. At first, she thought he somehow had some similarities to her first love. Even so, his looks, voice and personality weren't similar and he also made her think of him as a mysterious person... But it soon didn't matter. She loved him much more than her first love. Cloud was her hero and he couldn’t get away from danger. She saw him as someone full of confidence, cool and had the impression that he would disappear in an instant if she took her eyes off him. She wanted to stay by his side forever if she could. She really wanted to.
When she left her companions and headed for the Forgotten City, Cloud's heart was like an egg that was on the verge of cracking open. It wasn’t going to crack open like the way an egg hatched but, as if only the yolk was going to seep out of it. It was as if his mind was going to shatter. She wanted to comfort him. If she wasn't the last survivor of the Cetra she probably would have done so without a doubt.
So the answer is Aerith loved Cloud more than she ever loved Zack. There is no question of "whom do you think she liked more" because the answer I have just provided you to you is official. It was Cloud and not Zack.

*offtopic sry*

I think cloud killed both of them behind the scenes.
Think about it, Cloud meets Zack, suddenly he's dead.
Cloud meets Aerith and boom, she's dead as well.. suspicious..

uhm sorry about that.
I think it's Aerith and Zack.

a novel, huh? cool! ;)

She loved him much more than her first love

Since that Quotes taken from her Official novel i think the answers obvious.

At the end of the day - She Loved Cloud Not Zack

End of story - unless you wanna argue with the FF7 creators and whatnot

Lady Aerith pretty much summed it nicely, but there's one mere part of the game that "proves" Aerith loves Cloud more than she did Zack :

It is also quite possible that Cloud and Aerith had sexual relations. In the Cloud and Aerith date scene, we see this exchange:

Aerith: "I want to meet you."

Cloud: "But I'm right here."

Aerith: "I know, I know. What I mean is... I want to meet... you."

To interpret this scene accurately, I asked a Japanese language and cultural expert online at AllExperts.com whether the phrase, “I want to meet you” has a colloquial meaning in Japan. Here is my question and his answer:

Question
I'm wondering if the phrase, "I want to meet you" has a colloquial meaning to the Japanese along romantic lines? I've seen it used a number of times in English translations of Japanese songs and poems, and it seems to imply a romantic (or sexual?) encounter. Does it have that meaning colloquially?

Answer
You are absolutely right. The Japanese being very often obtuse in their use of language do use this expression to mean a romantic interest and it is found very often in pop songs. It is used most predictably in the speech of people from Tokyo but I have also heard it used in Osaka.

So we have established that Aerith was actually asking Cloud for a romantic, and possibly, a sexual relationship on the night of their date. Remember that even though Cloud did not respond to her at that moment and said very little to her that night, this is quite typical behavior for a Japanese male, and does not mean that Cloud wasn’t interested.

well since we have the answer to the question now, I will go ahead and close this ^_^
