I've tried googling this but keep getting different answers... is it only the old 60GB that is compatible with ps2 games? as I want to play FFX and plan to get a ps3 in the near future (ready got GTA V!) but I want one that will allow me to play ps2 games. tbh I do not want the very new superslim model because they feel and look cheap I will probs get the normal slim console.

Also can ps3s play ps1 games?

Yes ps3 can play any ps1 games no matter which one you get... also I think only the 20 and 60 GB were backwards compatible... and i heard some games didnt work and such... so really your best bet would be to buy a ps2, which you can get for $50 easy if you look in the right places.

ahh darn... I guess thats what I'll have to do then :(, I dont think it would be worth buying a preowned 60GB, probs wouldnt last very long... and I dont think the 20s were even sold in the UK??? never seen them..

I don't think the original models were released there, but I could be wrong

Also, most of the people I know who own an original 60G still have them in working condition.

From first hand experience: The original 60G is the only real model that has full backwards compatibility (BC), the 20G and 80G offered limited BC. Some games worked and some did not. I never researched which games did and did not work, though. I thought the second generation had no BC, but my neighbor proved me wrong. None of the slim models offer any form of PS2 BC, but all models offer PS1 BC.

If you ABSOLUTELY need BC, I'd advise getting a WORKING original 60G and purchases the warranty via the Playstation Store. Otherwise, keep a PS2 or wait for FF10 to be rereleased on the Playstation Store (if it ever is).

To be frank, though, the PS4 won't keep any purchases or any BC from the previous generations, so I'd advise not investing in any currently existing Sony consoles.
