If you want a great game with an epic storyline as well as showing you what the rest of the series is like - play FFVI first.
If you want a great game with an epic storyline that's totally unrelated from the rest of the series, play FFT.
Both are fantastic games, if totally different, so it's all up to you really. FFVI shows you what the rest of the series is like, while FFT is more of a strategy-intense game.
Holy crap my two favorite FFs (and possible my two favorite games) of all time. I'm going to approach it from a different angle then Stevie and say it depends on how modern you want the game to feel. Aside from the updated CGI, FF6 is an SNES era game, and FFT is a PS1 era game. FFT is going to have a slightly more modern feel, while FF6 might feel a little dated unless you are a fan of that era, or a huge FF fan. However, I'm going to assume if you have both games you are an FF fan, so I would say play FF6 first, then move on to FFT.
I'll try it from a time perspective. I'd say Final Fantasy VI is your standard length 30-50 hour RPG, while Final Fantasy Tactics is a pretty lengthy strategy game that took me more than 100 hours to finish. (I'm kind of slow, though, so it might not be the same for you.) You might be able to finish VI more quickly than you could finish Tactics.
FFT is one of my favorite FFs even though the storyline somewhat confused me, the gameplay is so deep and addicting! I have had final fantasy anthology for a while and had never played FFVI because the SNES graphics and oldschool gameplay turned me off. However, after seeing what people had to say on this forum i decided to pop it in and give it a try. I havent put it down since!! The storyline is seriously awesome and the gameplay is among the best in series that i've played (IV, VII-XII). There are major customization options and every single character feels very different. Anyways i would definitely say play FFVI first i promise if you're an FF fan you'll love it!
I'll admit, I've not yet played FF Tactics, so I can't really affirm or deny it as a game.
However, I can certainly encourage you to play FF Six. It's definitely one of the best FF's out there, in spite of its age. It's got a great story with very good character development, and the battle system will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from most other FF games. Not that I'm bad-mouthing Tactics...it's just my understanding that it's different from the rest of the series.
basically, if you want a strategy RPG that is a bit more sophisticated and has more customization, get FFT. If you want a more simpler RPG with well-balanced gameplay and a fun storyline, get FF6. I personally would reccomend FF6 first because it's fun and isn't annoying lol.
