Anime Which anime character had the worst upbringing?

The question is simple. Which character from any anime do you think had the worst past, and why?

For me it would be Lucy, and most of the people from Elfen Lied for that matter. I mean,

growing up being tormented by everyone you know, having your dog beaten to death right in front of your eyes by some sadistic kids, your only friend being shot in the head, and then being locked up all of your life, and getting out only to find you emotionally traumatized the only other person you ever cared about by killing their family? That's pretty bad.

Hm...I haven't seen a TON of anime, so there's probably a lot worse ones around.

I would personally go with Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket. First of all, when he was born, he was in the form of a horrible monster. His parents pretty much disowned him at birth, he got into fights all the time, his entire family found him disgusting. He has a long time rivalry with his cousin Yuki in martial arts. Even though Kyo has been practicing much longer than Yuki, Kyo still loses hopelessly every time. Eventually things turn back around for him, but it's a pretty awful childhood to me.

Another honorable mention I think would be Vash from Trigun. I'd be good to elaborate on that, but I see no point since I'd have to practically put the whole thing in spoiler tags.
