All right this has been bugging me for some time.

Is S-E just not creative enough to come up with original names, or what?

I mean, you've got Cloud and Squall, and in FFXIII apparently the names are rumored to be Lightning and Storm.

Not to mention others like Shadow, Edge, Dagger/Garnet and things like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if in some new installments we will be seeing names like Hurricane, Tornado, Earthquake, and Volcano.

>_>

Hey, don't forget Sora from KH, his name means sky :neomon:

I really don't know why they choose names like those. I think "Lighting" is just a codename (correct me if I'm wrong), but Cloud and Squall were actual names. I can't see anyone in real life naming their children after weather related things. Maybe it has to do with Japan's obsession with slapping random English into everything because it sounds cool, but they don't really grasp its meaning half the time.

You forgot Kairi and Riku, which mean - Land and Sea. I've never thought of this pattern before, but Square Enix do have a tendency to call characters, geological names. :/

Don't forget Zack! His last name is a reference to fair weather and serves as a contrast to Cloud Strife.

As for why they do this, I have no idea.. I guess it's just one of the things they've decided to have in the new FFs, kind of like how they have a Cid in every game.

I think it's just a trend they are going through (albeit a long one), it's like Pokemon in a way with all their recent games named after minerals; Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald etc.
I don't think it was planned to the woman in FFXIII, Lightning - according to Nomura because he wanted to end the weather trend.

They've used up all their creative juices making the game and can't think of any decent name's, or they must have a obsession with the weather

I don't see the problem - they're still good names at the end of the day. If you hate these weather references, why don't you come up with something more creative.
