Most Important thing?

Storyline but closely followed by characters.

To me, if a game doesn't consist of an intriguing storyline then it simply will just not suit me. I enjoy watching as the characters progress through the plot and create bonds. I like the idea of watching the protagonist fall in love with his leading lady while he saves her.

I'm not interested in being on a boat or in space. Final Fantasy never puts me on a boat (or at least not for long) or in space. This makes me happy, very very happy. Keep it up SE! Don't put me on a boat...

It would have to be the story. It is what keeps players intrigued and wanting to finish the game to see what happens. A good story will also have a great replay value. It is also wat make the game or breaks it. A game with a bad story isn't even worth the time.

Personally, characters. Characters can make or break a game for me. If I can't stand the characters, it's likely I won't be able to make myself play through the game no matter how hard I try. (See Final Fantasy X)

In games that don't have developed characters (FF I-III, and V to a point) gameplay Mechanics take precedence.

I chose characters.

The storyline is the most important, but it's not going to be convincing enough unless the characters are correct.

Really they go hand in hand though.
