What do we know about Squall's family?

The fact that they were married shows in the ending movie.
The little flashback of Laguna giving the ring to Raine, and then it switches to the gravestone of Raine Loire, indicating that they did marry. Otherwise why would she be buried with his name.

Seifers connections to/from/with:

with Rinoa: Former boyfriend/girlfriend
to Edea 2: accession, approach something like that and serves as knight of the sorceress
from fujin and raijn: adore
with Squall: opposition or conflict

and ofcourse Seifer is part of the orphan gang I mentioned before.

If you cant read Japanese, it says parent and child from Laguna and Raine to Squall. And from Edea to Squall (and the rest of the orphan gang including Ellone) it says once guardian or custody. From Laguna to Raine it says married couple.

I'm not that good in math either, I actually had to get a calculator because I wasnt sure I got it right. That's why I study a language, no numbers involved there.

Thats a nice scan there, I dont understand why guides released in Europe dont have this information. But nice work there.
 
It's because that's not a guide, but an Ultimania. A 'sourcebook', a compilation of interesting information about plot, world, and characters.
 
ok we all know that laguna and raine are squall's parents, but does squall himself know who his parents were? was it ever mentioned or showned in the game that i might've missed?

It's largely implied that Laguna will tell Squall everything, and that probably happens after the events of the game. I don't think that before that Squall was aware of his relationship to Laguna and Raine.
 
Well, Squall is age 17 during his time period, meanwhile Laguna is age 27 or something during his time period, so Laguna is age 34 when he met his son, make sense to me.

About the information about Squall's parent, the answer is very obvious no? like Bambi and Mariella said, Kiros did said he look just like her mother, but both father and son's personality is quite opposite to each other, don't you think?

Umm, Amano lover... you missed a decade. 17 +27 = 44, not 34. Of course, that's assuming his age was 27 as of the latest flashback, not the earliest, else he'd be even older than 44.

Hmm... are people arguing Laguna isn't Squall's father? I thought that was a totally dead issue, since he obviously is. I could tell just by looking through the manual, they look so freaking similar! o_O

I'm just confused about some of the timing of events (I need to play FF8 again) - did Raine actually die from childbirth or did she die after childbirth? And Laguna never actually met Squall prior to the events of the game, correct?

@Monsoon: Even if Squall did ever know Raine was his mother (which I don't think he did, once again need to play FF8 again. He certainly had no clue about Laguna.) he'd probably have forgotten anyways do to the whole GF thing.
 
ok ima just assume that laguna and squall had a father-son talk after the event of the game. aside from squall finding out who his parents were, how did laguna find out about squall. i mean, laguna became president and couldnt leave esthar and so he wasnt around when squall was born. the only one to have notice was ellone, and yet after 17 years laguna recognizes his own son..or was laguna informed ahead of time. maybe i missed something from the game, did i??

and did anyone mention why squall's last name isnt loire yet?

Wasn't Raine's last name Leonhart? I remember reading that on a fansite long ago, but I have no idea if it is true or not o_o

Also, if Squall and Laguna had the same last name, the whole twist would be painfully obvious. We're not supposed to know anything about Laguna, and by having the same last name as aSquall... pretty obvious hint.

Is there anything in the Ultimania to clear that part up?

I assume that Laguna left while knowing that Raine was pregnant. Even if he didn't (my timeline is a bit screwed up with this game), he would probably have eventually recieved word of Raine's pregnancy/death, since she was his wife. I guess he never went back in order to save himself from facing the scorn of the town. Otherwise if he didn't know, it'd seem a little dick-ish of Laguna for just leaving his wife like that without returning.

Squall probably found out after the game. I wish we could've seen it though. I found alot of the conclusions of the substories in FF8 to be fairly anti-climactic.
 
i could check if there is anything in the ultimania guides that support that theory.
But I left one of them at my parents, and I won't see them until friday, so if its in there I won't see it until then. Now I'm at school and obviously I don't bring my Ultimania's to school so be patient.
Unless someone else has em too?
 
I haven't found anything yet to confirm or dismiss the theories of the last name.
I did however find out that Raine died right after childbirth. It says so in the Ultimania guide. It's about how she lives in Winhill and looks after Laguna after a major wound. That they get married and Ellone is mentioned too as the neighbour girl. And she gets pregnant of Squall and dies right after birth. That the gist of it anyway. I'll try to translate it better tomorrow. Its kind of late in this country.


Edit: I put the text in babelfish. It comes out like this:

The pub was operated in the village of [reinuinru], it comes young, the woman. I really like the part where it says: It has the squall. It makes me laugh. The part after it not so much though.

the moomba pretty much gave it all away in the game... they are the evolved form of shumi village people so they are HIGHLY intelligent beings... their memory is exceptional, and they always knew people blood related to Laguna, their hero... =)
