Buddies are pretty much people who you are friends with on the site.
You can P.M. anyone without having them on your buddy list.
Buddylists are just there to show who you know or like on the site I guess. They aren't really that important. And they don't allow you to do anything special.
I swear there was a thread on this somewhere already.
