It's a mystery, but I'd go for the former.

Or, you know, there's always the possibility that no one online knew the answer and had the initiative not to post "Oh, I don't know, ask someone else."

As said, you receive a star for being a friend of FFF by donating any sum of money to Darkblade through paypal. You also receive stars by attaining the senior member status or even by becoming a member of staff. Check my profile for an example - I have both the senior member award and the Moderator award, whereas Rhea has both of these, and also a Friend of FFF Award.
