@Username Function and Visitor Messages?

Hiya, I only recently noticed that some people have used the @Fusionist function to get my attention, however I don't get a notification for some users.

Has this been limited to only friends now? I swear before anyone could do @Fusionist, and I'd get the notifications all the time

Is there a way to fiddle in my user cp so that I can get notified when anyone does it?

Likewise, can I set it up to allow anyone to post a visitor message to me?

Yes to all questions. Due to abuse of the mention feature, it was limited to only those who are on your friends list. You can change that by going to the Mentions link in your User CP and clicking the box that changes that permission.

As far as I know, anyone should be able to post VMs, so I'm not sure if that was changed when the mentions were changed. Either way, that should be able to be changed in the same fashion.

I am pretty sure that the mentioning system was overused for pointless actions and that is why they made the rules more strict.

On that same token, spamming of mentions in the Spam section or any other section in the forums is not allowed. It is quite intrusive especially if there was no valid reason for you to call members' attention in the first place. Members and staff find this highly annoying and unnecessary. Use the mention system if you have a reason for doing so, but if you are caught spamming this feature, you will receive a warning and/or infraction.
