The old argument, which do you prefer? Looking back on past games now a lot of the SNES games like Chrono Trigger and Yoshi's Island look as lovely as they did when they were originally released while the newer PS1, N64 and even some PS2 games while on more powerful hardware and used those fancy 3D graphics look at times dated.

It also depends on the genre/gaming franchise you're looking at, Castlevania is a prime example of a gaming series that needs to stay 2D and the less said about those Sonic abominations the better. For genres it's more of a personal choice but 2D Fighters > 3D Fighters any fucking day of the week, the Virtua Fighter games are bloody well made but it still isn't as fun as Street Fighter III, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 or the Guilty Gear games.

Your opinions/thoughts?

Though I love 3D games I can't deny the fact that I still enjoy playing good old 2D game like Mario, Zelda, and many others. Also I could add that I enjoy 2D Castlevania games even more than the resent futile attempts to make good 3D Castlevania games.

Because 2D games didn't focus on graphics they had great storylines and were great fun to play. Nowadays there is more of a focus on graphics which may take attention away from the actual game itself. But there is some games with great 3D graphics and amazing game play. In the end I would choose 3D over 2D.

I don't prefer one over the other. Some great games are meant to be 2D; others are meant to be 3D. I don't view one as being superior to the other.

Depends on what kind of game you prefer playing. If you're all about FPSs, then yeah...go with 3D. If you're all about RPGs, then it could go either way. Pokemon proves that.

I like 3D games but at times games being made into 3D from 2D are just way worse than the original. For example mortal Kombat was cool when it was a 2D fighting game and then when I saw MK in 3D i decided to give it a try but I really didn't like it but thats just me talking about it the rest of you might think diffrent.

That is true.
I prefer 3D games for most games but some games are just better in 2D...such as:

Mario....

Yeah thats also true I mean the 2D mario games were great but when i played Super Mario 64 everything changed I got used to the new mario games now.So just remember this "Not all 3D games are better than 2D games".

Like others have already said, it just depends on the game. I don't generally prefer one over the other. I love playing old school FF's that are 2D, but I love playing the new ones that are shiny, full of cg and new. I love the old 2D Mario games to pieces, but the newer ones are just as fun :P

But, yes......Sonic...poor Sonic. God I played Sonic games for hours and hours in a single sitting sometimes, but the newer ones...I haven't played all of them, but I've played a few, and yes, all I can say is they blow.

No preference. There are some games that just look absolutely stunning in 2D, like ChronoTrigger. Others are breathtakingly beautiful in 3D like Z.O.E. and TESIV: Oblivion. I think the way a gamer looks is up to the person playing it or watching it, but moreover up to the art production and design staffs behind it.
