Good day to you all.

I am currently a final year student at university and am required to write a thesis and do a practical project in relation to my degree pathway (Computer Games Design: Story Development).

My Thesis is asking the question why videogame music is an important design decision in role-playing games and why.

What I want from you lovely people (if possible) is to answer two things;

1) Which genre of game (do you feel) is music MOST important for? (Please keep the answer to this question short and simpy state a genre (or genres for my sanitys sake).
2) Your personal opinons on why music in ROLEPLAYING games is important for YOU. What, as an audience does it do for you? And would you feel the game would be just as good if music wasn't included (or badly done). (Feel free to let your opinions and feelings be expressed as fully as you wish).

I wish to thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing everyone’s opinion! By giving an answer and your opinion, you are officially contributing to my graduation, THANKYOU AGAIN!

1.) Well I guess I'm kind of biased, but I'd have to say Roleplay Games. Especially in a genre where the storyline is important, it's crucial to have music that helps draw in the player to the happenings in the game. In fighting games like Street Fighter or racing games like Burnout, it isn't nearly as important to have an epic soundtrack. Basically, you can just get any old midi or rock 'n' roll track and throw it on there and have it be good. In RPGs, orchestral tunes and ballads are very important to the game's success, though I suppose RPGs could still be successful with a mediocre soundtrack (ala Legend of Dragoon xD).

2.) Since music basically dictates my life (band and choir), I consider music in roleplaying games to be very important. For band ensembles and solo piano, I arrange and perform Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts music all of the time, so I guess that can show how much I am attached to the music. The plots in RPGs are already very gripping, so the music only adds to the depth and intensity of the situations.

If the music wasn't as good, I don't think I would take the plot/character development as seriously. My attention span already sucks, so I think it would be very difficult to stay interested in a game whose soundtrack is craptastic.

Yah.

This thread doesn't really belong here...I guess the closest place for it is the Voting Booth.
