Actually, the story had really nothing to do with how fun you had, thank the one who designed the game itself. But FF7 is brilliant, i think everything about it is pretty unique.
But in general terms, Tetsuya Nomura isn't actually making games other than story telling. So its not that much praiseworthy when it comes to designing games in general. Unless one prefers to create movies.(final fantasy spirits within was better than Advent Children. Screw that movie for making Cloud into a girlish unenthusiastic nimbag)
But Hironobu Sakaguchi on the other hand definetely deserves praise since he's the one responsible for the cool and fun games, but quited Square in 2004 though.

Look. He even designed FF7 original story, no wonder why that game was so good.

Unlike... ehem "Advent Children" and "Crisis Core" horrid gartruck.

Oh yeah, Kingdom Hearts plot, i couldn't care less about. The gameplay on KH2 is actually pretty fun though!. But the series is terrible in general which have spawned much of it.

Appalling.

I understand you care more about "fun gameplay" than story, but that has little with the impact of the "golden age."

The "golden age" is nothing more than nostalgia to begin with. The current industry has it's own issues, but to think it's a shift towards "story telling" is a problem is hell of a shot in the dark.

If you don't like these games, then don't buy them. I'm sure the developers of Super Meat Boy would be glad to have you in their ranks.

I'm sure the people who moan and groan about FPS or action RPG games will also disagree with you.

I have to agree with Ethics. It is all about the story for RPGs. You can have the best gameplay in the world, but will be a terrible RPG game without a story.

The PS1 or "golden age" of FF as you called it was all about the story. The gameplay was the same ATB that they had since FFIV. It was the story that hooked people.

I don't know about that... I can generally enjoy a good final fantasy game without getting too involved with the story. The golden age of final fantasy with 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 particularly having good stories compared to the lesser of the golden age of 1,2 and 3 having okay stories doesn't make them bad games. 12 and 13's story wasn't particularly that good, but it was enough for me to know what was going on. The battles were very well endowed and great as well I think. Particularly that 1,2 and 3 were made for just turn based. While 4-9 had a more active turn based for people who liked choosing attacks with lots of different words. Final Fantasy 10 started off with the CTB or (conditional turn based battles) and 12 was a bit of both, while 13 and 13-2 and Lightning Returns was all action based with playing as one character while two others helped. So in fact it doesn't mean just because an rpg doesn't have a good story or captivating story, doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.

FF12 is actually a pretty good game. I haven't gotten too far but i like the strategic way of fighting. I am currently playing "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13". Which is pretty good :)
