Well first I think I should start by saying that I didn't think that FF 12 was the best RPG I've ever played...and in fact, besides the battle system it was probably one of the worst. The storyline for me was a little bit straightforward (I like the twists!) all that and the characters didn't really develop like any of other Final Fantasies.

The cutscenes however did awe and capitivate me. That and the fact that the battle system was simply...great made me play through the entire thing.

Well sooo I get to the ending and beat the game and all that. And I'm thinking... "Woah! They killed Balthier and Fran" ...in the best way too. With that whole "Supporting Role" line after his big speech about not killing the leading man and all. Yet...at the very very end apparently Balthier and Fran survive.

That and they manage to steal back the airship from Vann and Penelo.

Am I just a bad person...or did anyone else feel sort of jipped out of a meaningful ending because they survived?

i've found that a lot of people didn't like the ending. for me, i thought it was great. i liked how balthier and fran survived. i also LOVED the storyline. people complain there was no character development, but i don't think that was the point of this story. i dunno. it felt so much more mature to me.

I think agree with that. Character development wasn't the point. I just expected more than what I got...or something different. Final Fantasy has a great new battle system, but it also had a new way of story telling that didn't rub me the right way. You know...the sort of focus that they put on Vaan even though the sotry wasn't actually about him.

Great way to write a book, but I didn't think that sort of storytelling fit an RPG

true. it's a little strange that vaan was the main character, when vaan really wasn't the main character. haha. the real story was focused on balthier (fran), basch, and mostly ashe. some people say vaan had no point to the story at all, but that's not really true. he wanted to be a sky pirate, yes, but more or less he hung around basch and co. because he wanted to avenge his brother's death. his bro was all he had left in life, and that was taken away by the empire.

penelo is really the only person that felt out of place to me. sure, she wanted to be around vaan to kinda look after him, or maybe just to acompany him, but it still felt strange to me. plus her clothes annoyed me. haha.

all in all, i loved the battle system, i loved the story, i loved the music, and i didn't mind the ending. i've already started playing through it again. this is one of my favorite RPGs and ranks VERY high on my FF list.

The ending is the best part of the story line, i like how all the scattered plot pieces resolve (from giruvegan to the end is very entertaining). Is in tune with the atmosphere.
Killing Fran and Balthier, especially the last one, even tough the heroism and drama would be too much (maybe this time Ashe would really take her life ;) ).
And talking about the final scene, could someone tell me what was the thing that Balthier says it is more valuable... i didn't catch it and right now i am finishing the hunts so it might be some time before i finish it again.

I felt that the character development was great (main playable characters only). However, I think the problem is with the serious lack of character interaction.

Although I felt the characters in this game are solid, likable and well played, ultimately as the story progressed, I found myself becoming more and more disappointed in the lack of character interaction among the party. IMO, a great cast of characters or lead character needs an excellent group supporting characters to be whole, this truly disappointed me since Square-Enix has always done an excellent job with this in previous FF titles.

Now back on topic with the ending.

From the start of the game I was in absolute awe and amazement with the FMV opening sequence, (among the best I’ve seen in a long time for the series) the game seemed to start out great and progressed well throughout with a couple of interesting plot twists. Because of the amazing opening, I guess I thought it would only get better, but ultimately as the game came to an end the story wound up being pretty straight forward and in the end, I felt it left several parts of the story simply discarded or unexplained for an incomplete feeling.

Ultimately, I can’t help from feeling like I’ve was thrown into the middle of an amazing story and in the end it seems to just drop out. However, its still and good game.

I was a bit dissapointed in the ending myself. I expected, well, something more dramatic I guess. There was no one suddenly dying or killed, no big romantic revelations, or anything like that.

That had to have been my biggest dissapointment that there was almost no romance in XII. I mean come on, it's Final Fantasy! :P

Overall, I still throughly enjoyed XII.

I loved the ending! it connected some of the, rather vague, love lines in the storyline! I mean, throughout the game, the connections weren't to solid, it was unlike any other final fantasy in that way. I mean, in the others they had pretty clear-cut love lines for the characters, but in this one it could've gone anyway between like.....8 different ways between all the characters with the fuzzy lines there.

But, that isn't the only reason I loved the ending, I loved it because of the ending. It cut the ties for me, and that rarely happens in games and such. I usually feel this lingering regret that I actually finished the game, but it didn't happen because the ending just gave me a feeling of satisfaction that I usually never get when I finish something that I'm really into.

But, also I the game's battle system and everything a lot as well. I mean, at the beginning, its hard to get used to the new system, but once you do, its great! and while I'm on this note, drkknight32, isn't your opinion on the battle system contradictory? I mean, first you say you didn't like, but then you say you did!

I also felt that the character development is great because its a deeper development, unlike the very surface development of the other FFs. What I mean is, Ashe gradually gets over her incessant desire for revenge, Basch gets over his utterly pitiful state of being when you meet him, Vaan grows up, and Fran accepts her situation and such. Balthier and Penelo didn't really change all that much but their character development was also well-developped as well. I also felt like this was a more mature storyline as well.

Just, all in all, I loved the game. And the ending fit really well.
