What aspects of Final Fantasy do you believe to be staples of the series? What about things that aren't necessarily staples, but simply recurring themes, or symbols?
Here is an obvious one:
Crystals
Here is a not so obvious one:
Case of Identity: I can't think of any hero, except for Firion, who doesn't go through a complete identity crisis. It seems like an integral part of Final Fantasy to me - even as Kingdom Hearts started to gain more FF aspects, it included identity as a major theme. It goes beyond the typical internal conflict that is essential to any plot and burrows much deeper into the core of the hero.
FFI - Class change (lol)
FFIV -
FFVI -
FFVII -
FFVIII - Squall's emotional transformation
FFIX -
FFX -
FFXII -
Kingdom Hearts II - the concept of a Nobody, esp. Roxas
edit: Thanks to Tetra Master for correcting me. I've fixed it.

Cecil's Dark Knight to Paladin transformation
Terra/Tina' amnesia, realizing she's half-Esper
Cloud's inheriting Zack's persona
FFIX -
Zidane finding out he's a Genome
Tidus finding out he is only a dream of the fayth
Basch being punished as his twin brother, Ashe unable to reclaim her title

even Bartz and Edgar have blue eyes if you like at their sprite closely. yeah it somewhat seems to be because FF is european-based and Europeans in Asia are noted for their blue eyes.
