This week's issue of Famitsu magazine has a two-page advertisement for something called Nier Replicant, featuring a comely white-haired lass and the tagline "Beyond revenge lies crazed desperation." No further information is available at present, but Square Enix promises in the ad to reveal all by next week.

We already know about Nier, of course, the Cavia-developed action game due out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 next year. Square Enix was serious enough about making Nier a hit in the West that they pondered not releasing the game at all in Japan at one point, but apparently they've reconsidered -- the game we know as Nier was formally announced for Japan today under the name Nier Gestalt.

So what's Nier Replicant, then? We'll find out next week.

I hope this is not a better version of Nier only exclusively in japan. Like more storyline and whatnot. SE have decided to release in japan under a new name Nier gestalt? Is it the same?

Square-Enix's new market strategy troubles me a bit. They are getting a little over-obsessed with appealing to the west when they are doing fine as they are. To me, Nier doesn't look like it can beat God of War III to be honest. I can picture the game getting average scores when it is released in the west.
