What I don't necessarily understand is why Squall is always called an "emo bitch" by everybody. While his character itself leaves things to be desired, he's not really annoying unless he's having an outburst of emotion. Other than that I think he's very relateable, down-to-earth, and intelligent. I can understand his desire early in the game to not want anything to do with anybody, and not want to talk, or anything. It's really not... uncommon, or emo. He never came off as depressed to me at all. Just introverted and antisocial.

What do you think of Squall?
 
I guess I wouldn't go so far as to call him an 'emo bitch' unless it were out of pure jest, but I do dislike his character. Not because he was Anti-Social, or introverted, but because he was a complete asshole to Quistis who genuinely cared about him, sisterly or otherwise. I don't think there should be an excuse such as,
"I've had a bad life"
To treat people like shit. Especially ones that have done nothing but help you for a very long time out of the kindness of their heart. I think Squall is just a little bit too selfish, besides when it comes to Rinoa. Who I also dislike. =/ Their love seemed random to me, and his personality changed drastically because of it. I kind of started to miss the jackass, and wondered why love for a girl that is everything he HATES changed him into any other pussy-whipped boy toy.
 
I can understand his resentment towards people who want to help him. And I can say it's not that he wants to harm them, or completely reject them, it's mostly because he feels he doesn't need them or he doesn't deserve their help. In my life, when I've gone through shit, some people have been nothing but nice to me and I've pretty much told them to fuck off, because I was in such a depressive state of mind that I didn't feel I needed or deserved anybody's help.
Well, that's just a personal connection.

On a side note, I dislike Rinoa and I want to kick her in the vagina repeatedly until she stops making sounds.
 
Rinoa I disliked for one soul reason. When she was created she was made to be a mix of Aerith and Tifa. I like Tifa, I like Aerith.. as their own people.. to try and combine that into one.. well that just doesn't work.

With that said, Squall is one of my most favored characters and I've been posed with the whole "emo bitch" thing before. For one, Squall is an admirable character and I liked how he was and there's one reason as to why that is. When we first meet Squall he doesn't seem to care about anyone, as long as he's fine and can pull through nobody else is of concern to him but then he progresses through the game and slowly comes to realize that his friends are important. He slips out of the hole he had dug himself and begins to help others around him. It's the change in charcter that draws me to him and FF8 was the first FF to make me cry. The ending was perfect, just to see Squall actually smile, that in itself was unique.

Sure he might've been a bitch at the beginning but just how much he changes.. it's just so moving. Not only that but he has the Lionheart! :wacky:

While I can see where you're coming from, I can't let my dislike for his character slide for it, though you got me to thinking which is a nice change from the usual defense I get for his character, so kudos for that. :) Quistis didn't deserve to be treated the way she did though, and while she liked Squall and never got mad at him for being the way he was... my anger towards him only grew. I guess I was being angry for her. XD

He's kind of boring too, imo. I'm not really into those brooding types much... Though, the personality flip made me upset too. His character just cannot satisfy! Ah, oh well.
 
I don't necessarily LIKE Squall's character, either. It's just that I think he gets too much bullshit. And yes, I thought Quistis was a good character and I don't think she deserved the treatment from Squall either.
 
He is not a bad character, just not one that many people like because of his emo like behavior. If he was all happy go lucky, we might even hate him more, so the squall we got, we should be thankful for. maybe square was trying to make a character who was cool and cold, hence squall was made the way he is. he's my favorite FF hero and i like him the way he is
 
When FFVIII first came out I dot even think the term emo even existed, i just saw him as introverted, that is all. I liked his character, sure he was quiet and brooding, and what? It didnt bother me in the slightest. I certainly didnt view him as emo, becuase well, as I a;ready said, emo wasnt even som ething Id even HEARD of back then. Just cuz he was quiet and kept his thoughts to himself? sheesh -_-

I like this post a lot, it really says it all about Squall. Squall is my personal favorite FF character and I don't think there could ever be a character made in the future that will top him for me. I like him because I can relate to him. Not so much as being cold or anti-social, but as an independent warrior. He was always confident about his ability and was willing to change the world, even if it meant he had to take on everyone himself. I suppose I'm not ambitious like him, but a semi-dark personality full of independence. I don't think there is a single character in any FF game that developed as much as Squall did, and his change was certainly for the best. I think most just fixate on his asshole personality at the beginning of the game and don't focus much on his personality progression. Turns out Squall isn't such a bad guy after all!
 
Because people can be immature ? He wears slighty dark clothing so people just use that as a advantage to tease/ mock/ make fun of his character.

Kind of waver between really liking Squall and just really hating his guts.
Just dislike how he pretends that he can't dance, to try and make a embarrassment publicly out of Rinoa. Then when somebody is in a down/depressed moment and is really in need to just reach out to somebody, he tells her to shove off and go and speak to a wall ''

But then just remember his past with Ellone and how badly he has problems with trusting others and how badly he struggles in not trusting friends and too scared to get close to people, and just really relate to those feelings and emotions. Squall can either make you cry emotionally or just give you a headache and make you want to throw your PlayStation controller at him.

But yeah. He's a very smart and intelligent man. And he's realistic. He's not too much down on pessimism, or getting to far getting carried away.

But really 50/50 on Squall. :/

I really liked Squall, he is up there with my favorite main characters. And I didn't think he was 'emo', I agree with you and think that he was just a little antisocial and introverted. He basically was thrown into this big event, and when things got really tough he acted like the hero he was supposed to be.
 
I always liked him. He was determined and would always get his job done.
He wasn't emo, If he was emo he'd be complaining about his life all the time.
Squall is just Cold and Antisocial. He didn't like opening up or talking to other people. He just wanted to do a good job.
 
His character quite similar to mine, so I actually liked him.

He is unsocial, and so am I. As well as he can't stop thinking, just like me (takes me more than a hour to fall asleep even when I am already in bad :gonk:)
Aside of that, he was a fine leader and showed the others can depend on him.


Many people love Cloud (from what I read in different posts) and I find a strong similarity between those two. Maybe more people like Cloud because of his look and sword. But as a character, I prefer Squall.
He is one of my most favorite characters, maybe even the most favorite (it hard to say, as I usually tend to make hot/cute women/girls as my most favorites simply because of their look :P)
 
Squall has a couple of things going against him:

First, he is an introverted guy, which in the normal world is a distinct "mark" against one by many societal standards. One has to want to be friends and be with people, the other is just not normal... yech.

Second, he is a bit of a hard edged bastard from time to time, which is wholly unacceptable you know. One always has to smile and be the nicest person you can.

Third, he acts odd and completely different around Rinoa. How dare he try to be nicer and act different around the woman he loves! How dare he fall in love with such a raging harlot! Burn them at the stake!


To be serious: Squall is actually quite a realistic lead that tends towards seclusion. Many people have issues with those of us who dare wish to be alone from time to time or who don't wish to share their feelings with everyone at every single moment.

Also, I loved the Rinoa/Squall love. It just sort of happened and the progression was fantastic in my opinion. But then I never believed Quistis/Squall was ever going to be more than sisterly, or that Seifer/Rinoa was anything more than a brief date with little or no intimacy.
 
He is basically portrayed as an individual wanting to have his own space and be left alone. He doesn't want to get into other people's affairs and he doesn't want people getting into his. He just followed his duties as a SEED member and when things got rough he protected what he thought was right. He fought for nothing but to be righteous and protect his friends and get rid of any obstacle that got in the way of that.

There is nothing wrong with how he acts and he's certainly not a sociopath or emo (whatever that means) because he's antisocial, he shows that he has care and trust for his friends. He isn't mean spirited either, he doesn't act mean towards anyone, he just doesn't talk and open himself up much to them. Only by societal views is he labeled as an outcast or an oddball and societal and mainstream views are very misleading to follow with.

It isn't as if he was trying to isolate himself and become an exile to the world. He was just trying to find which path he should take to ultimately walk in life and when he found Rinoa it enabled him to find it because he found love and thus he was able to unify with Rinoa and form a loving relationship with her. It helped him get rid of the wall that was blocking his way and he was finally able to traverse down the path and ease up all of his troubles.

That's what the story is pretty much about, notice how most of it was to save Rinoa? By saving Rinoa, Squall was able to save himself and look at life in a different view, a view that he wasn't able to see before because he was alone and didn't even have parents to love him as they died when he was at a young age, but when he found out that he wasn't alone and had a lot of people who cared about him and Rinoa it helped him see things better.

I can be sympathetic towards Squall for all that he been through.

If I remember correctly, I think most of his story gets explained at the Edea's Orphanage cutscenes doesn't it? It's been a while since I've played.

It's also been awhile time for me to play ff8 also, in fact I'm playing disc 2 JUST start haha,

I do see some people point about taking avdangtale (spell?) Of Squall by dark cloth etc etc. But dude that cloth is just pure cool IMO. :awesome:

Otherwise.. I have my friend who amlost same Squall, quiet dont social, dont trust anyone much.. But eventually he start trust by bit and bit. Cause he have lost something important and finally realize it.. So I'd say Squall isnt emo bitch or anything..

And that include hes hot :awesome:
 
Squall is my favourite lead in a FF game yet because no other character undergoes as much development as him both socially and personally. Cloud and Squall are actually quite similar in personality early in the game when you think about it, simply looking to get the job given to them done and to move on to the next thing.

I also believe Squall and Seifer share similar characteristics. The only difference between them being Seifer is open and even cocky about his own ability while Squall keeps to himself but also knows he has the ability to get the job done. He never complains about his life, simply comes across to others as not wanting to talk about any issues he may have.

Sorry, i didnt mean it the way it was written. He acts in a cool way that people in turn categorize as being emo, which i think is really cool and made me want to use him every chance that i got
 
Squall is my favourite character ever. His change from heartless to loveable is simply indescribable. His cagier type is so interesting. And I knew at the first moment that this guy is someone special. Anytime he would open his heart - and yes, I was right ^^
I would never say he's a "emo bitch" or the like. That's the dumbest statement ever - no, Squall is the best character of all FFs (but that's just my point of view ^^)
